About us
The Department of Defense activated U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) April 16, 1987, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. The DoD created the new unified command in response to congressional action in the Goldwater-Nichols Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 and the Nunn-Cohen Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 1987. Congress mandated a new four-star command be activated to prepare Special Operations Forces (SOF) to carry out assigned missions and, if directed by the president or secretary of defense, to plan for and conduct special operations.

Today, we honor the Night Stalkers for their commitment and contributions to our nation's security. The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) was formed in response to the Iran Hostage Crisis in 1980. Established as Task Force 160 in 1981, this specialized aviation unit quickly became essential for high-risk, nighttime operations, pioneering night flight techniques and earning its reputation as the go-to for special operations aviation. Their expertise in night operations and ability to fly in the most challenging environments make them indispensable to #SOF and earned them the name, "#NightStalkers."

Intelligent Components Software Platforms Open Technology Systems (ICSPOTS) Assessment Event (AE) is now live! U.S. Citizens Only https://lnkd.in/e9tRuMnR - Submission Please submit NLT 30 October 2024, 11:59 PM ET here: https://lnkd.in/eVCbk94C - Q & A Telecon Intelligent Components Software Platforms Open Technology Systems (ICSPOTS) Virtual Q&A Telecon will take place on 16 Oct 2024 from 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET. RSVP NLT 15 October 11:59 PM ET here: https://lnkd.in/eMET3QfB - Purpose SOFWERX, in collaboration with USSOCOM Program Executive Office – SOF Warrior (PEO-SW) and the Army Research Lab, will host the Intelligent Components Software Platforms Open Technology Systems (ICSPOTS) Assessment Event (AE) to develop concepts and components of systems that utilize an open architecture to enable Electronic Warfare (EW). Additionally, system-level aspects, such as integration, testing, and training, are also considered to ensure fieldable solutions. - Background/Synopsis With a rapidly changing tactical operational environment and the preponderance of radio frequency (RF) signals in the space, maintaining a comprehension of cyber and EW persistent threats continues to put risks to the Warfighter operating in the field. The ability to increase awareness of adversarial capabilities from an EW perspective and prevent U.S. forces from being targeted is of utmost importance. The Foundational Research for Electronic Warfare in Multi-Domain Operations (FREEDOM) program at the Army Research Lab, in partnership with USSOCOM, aims to improve the ability to sense and communicate in the multispectral space to support Multi-Domain Operations. These requirements are increasingly challenging due to the expansion of the contested RF spectrum and the new sensors virtually occupying the RF space. One of the most persistent challenges in the Department of Defense is the advent, or availability of a scalable and sustainable data structure and schema. The use of scalable knowledge graphs for certain disciplines and domains will deliver an unprecedented foundation to apply machine learning and eventually artificial intelligence to the EW problem set. - Technology Focus Areas 1. Sensors 2. Data networking (transport/backhaul) 3. Data processing 4. Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence 5. Data Visualization 6. System Integration, Testing, and Training Concepts - Objective USSOCOM PEO-SW will use this assessment event with Government, Industry, Academia, and National Laboratory participants to identify solutions providers and evaluate technology, architecture, and implementation strategies through technology evaluations and/or technology sprints to enhance our understanding in this area. #OpenTechnologySystems #MultispectralSpace #CyberThreats #DataNetworking #DataProcessing #SystemIntegration #MachineLearning #ArtificialIntelligence #DataVisualization

On Oct. 4, 2024, Allied Special Operations Forces Command welcomed U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Richard E. Angle as the new commander. This momentous change comes as we thank US Army Lt. Gen. Antonio M. Fletcher for his leadership, and congratulate him as the ceremony also signified his retirement from a prestigious 35-year military career. Under Lt. Gen. Angle's command, SOFCOM stated we are poised to tackle the evolving global threats together. As he steps into a unique role — serving as the SOFCOM Commander, SACEUR’s Special Forces Advisor, and Commander of U.S. Special Operations Command Europe — he emphasizes the need for unity in addressing today’s complex security challenges. #StrongerTogether Together, we move forward, ready to defend and protect the NATO Alliance!
