💥 New Call for healthcare companies in the process of seeking investment!   CataloniaBio & HealthTech, together with ACCIÓ, is organising Connection Day 2024, which will include a pitch competition and investment forum for startups seeking funding and new investors.  So, if you are a startup in the health sector (pharma, medtech, biotech, digital health, services) in Catalonia with 10 years or less of existence, you can participate!  ➡️ Format of the event:  🔸 Presentations of 10 startups (non-competitive) - 3 minutes/pitch ➡️ Phases: 🔸 Selection of startups: This will be done by an external selection committee with other ecosystem stakeholders. Excited to see the innovations these future healthcare leaders will develop and pitch! ❓𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 - 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡? This was one of the interesting questions raised by the students. To be honest, I stumbled… Looking beyond the obvious that the solution must exist before you can pitch it, what matters more? The solution itself is definitely important as it is the foundation. If the solution effectively addresses an unmet need and delivers value, it can succeed with a mediocre pitch as long as it reaches the right audience. This is where product-market fit is validated and the solution sells itself. However, at the same time, the pitch is crucial to effectively communicate the value of the solution to stakeholders - investors, customers, or even your own team members. Different stakeholders see the value of a solution differently. A great pitch can elevate a good solution by attracting attention, securing buy-in, and unlock resources and support needed for success. While a poor pitch can cause even the best solutions to go unnoticed. Thoughts? I'm sorry but whilst I understand the sentiment of point 2, which feels like a classic, convenient institutional view of the world, I can't help but disagree with it too. Yes, we need to solve the biggest problems, and with the most energy, but the sign of healthy innovation is not that what is and isn't 'innovatable' is a short list of specific top down priorities. If you look at some of the most innovative health organisations (e.g. Buurtzorg) they recognise that solutions should come from the context, and freely. Innovation shouldn't be dictated or unilateral, otherwise we're effectively saying that the NHS is not interested in tech that supports: Rare diseases for small groups Diversity and supporting different demographies - e.g. Written Medicine Marginalised, vulnerable groups - e.g. Thalamos and digitising the mental health act. Creative forms of prevention (since one of the top priorities is in year savings). I'm sure the sentiment of the speakers was more nuanced, but this statement of only focusing on nationally defined priorities, and what I think is a problematic mode of thinking when it's used as big sweeping statements on what's OK and what's not. Now maybe it's true and that's what will get paid for, but whether it's right or appropriate is an entirely different matter. Sorry for the rant Dr. Derrick Khor - but I keep hearing this a lot, and I just think this is a statement that manifests from a reactive, short term system, and not one with a long term outlook. I'm not OK with that.
