How often do you think about where your food comes from? Not the grocery store or farmers market where it was bought, but where it was grown and how it got to your plate. Living in such a high-consumer society, it is easy to forget and lack appreciation for the things we have before us – what they are made of, the work that went into creating them, and how they got to us. Being in a country that has advanced and developed in many ways is a luxury, one that many people take for granted. This creates a disconnected society where consumers understand little about the product. As a society, we cannot work to address our environmental issues until people learn about the interworkings of the world and care more about where and how things come to be and less about getting the newest things right when they want them. One way we can combat this is by educating people about their food, teaching from farm or field to fork. By reinvolving people in the process of growing, harvesting, and preparing their food, we can create a society that is more aware of the interworkings of the world, starting with food. This allows people to be more aware of what is needed to sustain their food sources, whether it be the land needed for crops to grow or the environmental conditions needed to support the animals often consumed. After people understand this, they gain a better appreciation for the things around them, including the environment. "It's not about killing. It's about hunting, conservation, and they all appreciated every second of being out in the woods." - Bob Schwalm. This video demonstrates the impact of involving people in the process of hunting and processing their food, thus connecting them to our natural resources and allowing them to have an active role in conservation. These people weren't just taken to a farm and shown the animals; they were taken out on a hunting excursion where they learned where the animal they were hunting exists, how that animal thinks, and how it plays into the ecosystem. Educating people on the journey of their food is a powerful way to foster a greater understanding of the interconnectedness in the world, with a focus on food and its sources. By involving these people in their food, there is the potential to create a more conscious and appreciative society. Efforts to bridge the gap between consumers and the sources of their food contribute not only to individual awareness but also to broader environmental stewardship. Educational efforts like these are one of the best ways to get the community involved in conservation and to be more environmentally aware. By reconnecting these people with their food, we are reconnecting them with the environment and ultimately the planet.
