Ladies, let’s talk about cervical health and empowerment! In 2010, I had to undergo a loop diathermy treatment to remove pre-cancerous cells. It was a stark reminder of how important it is to stay informed about what’s happening in our bodies, even when we can’t see or feel it. I had no symptoms, BUT it was picked up by the routine screening test I was sent for by the NHS. Was I glad I turned up for that appointment. OK, these tests are uncomfortable and feel a little awkward, but I had gotten used to them, and after all they are only every 3 years. Cervical screening (smear tests) are one of the best tools we have to protect ourselves, but recent stats show a worrying trend: In England, a record number of women have not been screened, with participation rates continuing to drop. In 2021, 3,200 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer in the UK, yet many of these cases could have been prevented with early detection. So why aren’t more women attending screenings? Some common reasons include: Anxiety about the procedure Fear of the results Lack of time or access to appointments Cultural stigmas or misunderstandings But here’s the truth: cervical screening can save lives, it potentially saved mine. It’s quick, free, and can detect changes early before they turn into something more serious. Here’s how we can take action together: Book that smear test—it’s only a few minutes that could change your life. Educate yourself on symptoms like unusual bleeding, pain during sex, or changes in discharge—don’t ignore them! Support and encourage each other. Talk openly about your experience to reduce stigma and fear. Your health is your power. Let’s protect it together. Ovarian cancer is a challenging disease, and for non-Hispanic White women, survival rates are 40-42%. However, for Black women, survival rates are even lower at 29-31%, and there are many factors contributing to this discrepancy, from unconscious bias to hospital system factors to insurance coverage and incidences of comorbidities. I spoke with DocWire News recently to discuss the health disparities faced by Black women with ovarian cancer and the screening options and symptoms that women can look out for to proactively look out for their health.
