From safeguarding waterways to promoting biodiversity, hippos are vital to achieving SDG 14 - Life Below Water. Today, we raise awareness about these magnificent creatures. Did you know? 1. Hippos are herbivores, munching on 80lbs of grass daily, keeping grasslands in check & promoting plant diversity. 2. They act as “ecosystem engineers,” stirring up water, releasing nutrients, & creating habitats for fish & invertebrates. 3. Hippos contribute to tourism, generating income for local communities & fostering appreciation for wildlife. 4. Did you also know that the biggest hippopotamus weighed almost 4500kg? Despite being such heavy weights, they are incredible swimmers! BUT, their future is murky. ⚠️ Habitat loss, climate change, & illegal hunting threaten these gentle giants. Today is #worldbeeday and we marked the occasion by welcoming a new swam into our Montague Street Garden hives. The video show mark patterson giving our precious bees a health check. World Bee Day is celebrated on May 20 every year to honour the vital role of bees and other pollinators in our ecosystems and food security. The date was chosen to commemorate Anton Janša, a Slovenian pioneer of modern beekeeping, who was born on May 20 1734 and taught at the first beekeeping school in the world. Bees are not only producers of honey and wax, but also essential agents of pollination, which is the transfer of pollen from one plant to another, enabling fertilisation and reproduction. Pollination by bees and other insects affects 75% of the world's crops and 90% of wild flowering plants, contributing to biodiversity, climate resilience, and human livelihoods. However, bees and other pollinators are facing multiple threats, such as habitat loss, pesticides, diseases, invasive species, and climate change, which endanger their survival and diversity. World Bee Day aims to raise awareness of these challenges and promote actions to protect and conserve bees and their habitats, such as planting bee-friendly flowers, avoiding pesticides, and supporting local beekeepers. #worldbeeday #bees #pollinators #apicultural

🐝 Let's Celebrate World Bee Day! 🐝 Every year since 2018, on May 20th, we honor the essential role of bees and other pollinators in maintaining the health of our planet and its people. Thanks to the efforts of the Government of Slovenia and the support of Apimondia, this day was declared by the UN General Assembly. Bees and other pollinators are vital to our world, supporting agriculture and biodiversity globally. With over 20,000 species of bees and countless other wild pollinators, they face unprecedented challenges, with their populations dwindling. In celebration of World Bee Day, we are excited to introduce a series on projects created within the EU CAP Network Operational Groups. We contribute to global commitments to preserve ecosystems and biodiversity by financing and supporting a pollination project. What does it consist of? For three years, by donating a portion of our profits to this project, we are sponsoring beehives in a French forest, thus actively contributing to the protection of bees, an endangered species in France. Why protect bees? Bees are essential pollinators that contribute to the reproduction of plant species. 80% of human food depends directly on pollinators. Good Morning all, Happy Monday 😊🐝 World Bee Day corresponds with an important influencer in the pioneering of beekeeping. Anton Janša, who in the 18th century pioneered modern beekeeping techniques in his native Slovenia, was one of the first people to help bring about the importance of bees in the world environment. Since then, beekeeping has become a vital necessity in the world’s ecosystems and economic systems. However, not many people realize the importance of bees or know how to help save the bees, which led to the announcement of World Bee Day through the United Nations. The United Nations designated World Bee Day to raise awareness of the importance of bees. Bees are under a continuous threat from human activity, which includes the introduction of invasive insects, pesticides, land-use change, and monocropping practices, which have continuously been destroying bee colonies over time. On this World Bee Day I share my thoughts about wild #honeybees! 🐝 Unlike domesticated bees, which are managed by beekeepers for honey production, wild honeybees live without human intervention. Why Wild Honeybees Matter: 🌸 Natural Pollinators: Wild honeybees are essential pollinators, supporting the reproduction of many plants and crops. Their diverse foraging habits ensure the pollination of a wide range of plant species. 🧬 Genetic Diversity: Living without human management allows wild honeybees to develop natural resistance to diseases and adapt to environmental changes, contributing to genetic diversity and resilience. 🌱 Ecological Balance: These bees have always been a natural part of our forests. They maintain their natural behaviors and contribute significantly to biodiversity and the health of these ecosystems. What Can We Do? Organizations like FreeTheBees are promoting the conservation of wild honeybees. They emphasize the importance of seeing honeybees as wild animals that need our protection just as much as any other wildlife. Furthermore, they educate beekeepers for a more sustainable and natural way of caring for honebees.
