One in 36 children in the United States are diagnosed with autism, according to the CDC. That means that every year, tens of thousands of parents begin a crash course in learning how their child’s brain works differently and what they can do to help their kid navigate the challenges of their diagnosis. Positive Development found that developmental therapy is the best approach, and they are now the largest provider of the therapy in the U.S. They currently serve more than 1,100 families across eight states. Most importantly, its model is now covered by insurers. Making its services affordable—especially to families with limited resources—is a huge part of its mission.

Knowledge is power. Spreading the knowledge is CRITICAL.
Autism is a spectrum. Autistic people can have a spectrum of strengths and challenges. Even within a single person, autism is ever-changing. Over the course of an autistic person’s life, the way their autism shows up might shift—and their support needs might change as a result. Sometimes it is because of the setting or context, while other times it is what happens to all of us as we grow older. That is why early diagnosis and intervention is so important: these services give people with autism the best chance to learn skills that help them overcome their challenges and gain as much independence as possible later in life. Unfortunately, these services are not available to everyone. Autistic people in minority communities, for instance, often struggle to gain access to early intervention and other services that can improve their quality of life in childhood and throughout the lifespan. In my new blog post, I talk about these disparities in access to care, and the need for greater consideration of these communities as we build programs and policies to serve people with autism. #healthequity #autismresearch #qualityoflife https://lnkd.in/gkhvVPwY

April is Autism Acceptance Month, and it's a time to uplift autistic voices and celebrate the incredible diversity within the neurodivergent community. This insightful article sheds light on what autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is and how we can support the community. Key takeaways: 1️⃣ Listen to autistic voices: Center the experiences and perspectives of autistic individuals in research, policy-making, and advocacy efforts. "Nothing about us without us". 2️⃣ Use respectful language: Avoid harmful labels and language like "low-functioning" or "high-functioning." Respect individuals' preferences when it comes to identity. 3️⃣ Support autistic-run organizations. 4️⃣ Educate: Stay informed about autism and challenge stereotypes by sharing accurate information. Take a moment to reflect before sharing content that may perpetuate harmful myths about autism. https://lnkd.in/ecty5H93 #ProFoundReads #Accessibility #DisabilityInclusion #AutismAcceptance #Neurodiversity #DEI [Credit: Samantha Edwards, Zoe Gross]

Taking a step towards early detection of autism. A recent study has demonstrated the effectiveness of a screening tool in detecting autism at an early stage within primary care settings, potentially enabling timely interventions for young children with the condition. Conducted between August 2020 and November 2022, the large-scale study focused on evaluating the efficacy of the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised with Follow-Up (M-CHAT-R/F) questionnaire. The findings underscored the importance of early detection and intervention in improving outcomes for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). #OneNUHS #HealthierSG #ShapingMedicine

So proud of NUH CDU and Aishworiya Ramkumar with our NUP colleagues! Despite autism being the top DALY condition for children now in Singapore, we have not validated screening tools which we can use, and which we can embed within the health booklet. Here it is now with results from our MCHAT study— with a second phase study underway. Read about our paper, published in Autism, here. https://lnkd.in/gKaWQp22
