SAVE OUR SEAS - STOP the SEWAGE SCANDAL!
A very important message from my good friend Chris Hines MBE (Moaning Bloody Environmentalist) who is the Co-Founder and lead at Surfers Against Sewage through the 1990s.
''After 30 years of campaigning, protesting and exposing the disgusting damage being done to our waterways, water companies finally have nowhere left to hide.
Sewage is headline news. An election is imminent. 2024 really is our year to turn the tide. That’s why Surfers Against Sewage has a plan to go all out to pile the pressure on all politicians, so they change up these sh*tty policies for good.
But financially, it's going to take everything we've got and more to make sure our fight is a top priority this election. Bigger stunts. More trips to parliament. More people mobilised through community actions and protests. The cost of a winning campaign is high.
That’s why as a Surfers Against Sewage Co-Founder, I’m here in your inbox, asking for your help. For 7 days only, we have an incredible opportunity to immediately double every single pound donated up to £100,000 by the Big Give.''

Rain Barrels are your backyards best friend! Why?
💦-> With this FREE WATER SOURCE homeowners save big on their water bills by up to 40%!!
💦-> FRESH & CLEAN. Rainwater has none of the chemicals commonly present in most municipal water sources.
💦-> BE GREEN. Rain barrels help minimize harmful excess runoff into our streams and lakes, while reducing the pressure on municipal sewer systems.
Do you know any other ways a Rain Barrel can help us be kind to our planet? How do you use your Rain Barrel? Let us know in the comment section 😊👇

Our Bureau of Highways does a lot to curb the amount of litter piling up in the county. In the past five years, DPW has removed over 800,000 pounds of trash from county roads, parks and highways. You can do your part by following these simple waste management tips:
- Keep a bag for trash in your car;
- Pick up any trash you see in your yard, and secure your bins with tight-fitting lids; and
- Participate in community cleanup events.

The activists, ideologues, vendors, contractors, consultants, nonprofit corporations, journalists, opinion shapers, and experts that control and serve California’s state water agencies need to consider their credibility outside their own powerful echo chamber. Restricting Delta pumping during two big storms is another example of how they are squeezing the life out of farmers and urban water agencies, and by extension, the people of California.

🧮 We love data. Science and data have always been at the core of what we do at The Rivers Trust.
In our latest monthly blog for Countryside Jobs Service, our Media & Events Lead Rebecca Duncan explores the importance of having (and making widely available) reliable data on our rivers, and Senior Technical Analyst Josh Jones shares insights on what it's like to be in the Tech Team at The Rivers Trust. 👇
Today we are highlighting how important data is for charity and conservation organisations, and Rebecca Duncan from our featured charity The Rivers Trust, tells us just how much of a difference data can make.
They first published a version of the Sewage Map back in 2019 when many people were unaware that there is a legal framework for discharging untreated sewage directly into waterways. Now, fast forward five years, and they have firmly put sewage pollution on the agenda, with their data being used to support campaigns leading to the first official bathing water designations on England’s rivers and has motivated tens of thousands of people to contact their MPs to demand action!

Happy World Water Day 💦
Rainforests and water are deeply interconnected. The roots of rainforest trees that reach far down and across the forest floor draw water up and release it back into the atmosphere where it becomes fluffy clouds or mists. These get darker and heavier before releasing almighty rainfall - sometimes back into the forests they came from but often feeding vast lakes or rivers. Scientists believe that water can travel across the world during this incredible cycle.
Rainforests recycle vast amounts of water; without them, droughts could become more common.
Help protect the world's rainforests, which are crucial to climate stabilisation, by donating to Rainforest Trust's Conservation Action Fund via the link below.

Did anyone else spend hours as a kid collecting spare change and rolling it up in those paper coin wrappers as a donation to "save the rainforest"?
I spent SO much time doing this, thinking I was making a difference. Every time I see stats on deforestation I wonder where that money went. Not that my rolls of pennies were ever going to make much of a difference.. but how could several decades of "save the rainforest" campaigns fail to reduce deforestation? And what are we doing today that will be the equivalent of rolling pennies when we look back 20 years from now?
The Deforestation and Restoration Targets Tracker (beta) by World Resources Institute and Global Forest Watch is a super useful illustration of recent deforestation rates and the path to zero deforestation. We have a long (and steep) road ahead! What policies, tools, and actions will finally get us there?
... awesome and in Townsville, we make "living leaky weirs" with some of our 1st Nations partners and collaborators ... living means we apply an ecological stimulant of biology and 'starter sugars' to activate and partner with existing and local native microbiology in soils consisting of lichen, fungi and microhizal relationships with purple phototrophic bacteria and archaea "🥸 simples".
We find that it is the practices and techniques of delivery which then matter, and 'leaky weirs by humans and nature' is just one or two of our integrated practices, techniques and delivery. We adapted these from Three Big Rivers (3BR) who learnt this art in the Burdekin with our Regional NRM group ('NQ Dry Tropics').
Quite a journey of collaboration and discovery locally in our drier tropics.
We now do "living bunds", "living bags" and "living mulch" ... we make living mulch which we put in natural fibre (formerly known as) sand bags.
This becomes integrated runoff runways/pathways ... aka known in Western culture as 'stormwater management' and we have found natural integration with urban form and concrete. we incorporate living bunds, bags and mulch into our man-made structures with amazing results where we sculpture local places.
We find in our experience that not only are we restoring living rivers, banks and beds ... we are regenerating and activatively remediating life, based on their world of collaboration and competition, they evolved over billions of years dealing with toxic conditions. so life is mediated and regenerated ... so cool and thank you to all our partners and collaborators in North Queensland and beyond (e.g. IECA and Mulloon Institute).
... our "local ecological stimulant" is provided by VRM Biologik based here in Townsville, with them going wider to be helping build "healthy living soils" across our region, and through partnerships, support, systems research and business, working with government, farmers and community into USA, China, SEAsia and Middle East ... is that cool or what ... them-us.

The Australian landscape is currently 50% more dehydrated than before the arrival of European settlers but our landscape can be repaired and restored.
The attached video outlines a key technique used by The Mulloon Institute to regenerate and rehydrate catchments across Australia - https://lnkd.in/g9fKzK8x
Environmental laws and regulations are preventing these repairs and The Mulloon Institute is proposing a Code to fix the regulatory issues - https://lnkd.in/gf9dBMwh
We call on Tanya Plibersek and Murray Watt to champion the Code and empower Australian farmers and communities to quickly and easily repair their landscapes and catchments. There's no time to lose. This is a no brainer.

Today is World Environment Day, a day created by the United Nations to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment.
By supporting Feeding San Diego, you are helping to keep perfectly good edible surplus food out of landfills, where it creates methane gas, a climate super pollutant 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
Watch this video to learn more about the importance of feeding people, not landfills.
