New Oceana analysis released this week shows nearly 3,000 fishing vessels spent months – and sometimes years – at sea without coming to port last year. These long voyages can be a risk indicator of illegal fishing activity or forced labor. “Extensive time at sea keeps vessels away from scrutiny and increases the risk of illicit conduct on the high seas. We cannot have accountability at sea without transparency at sea.” – Oceana Campaign Director Dr. Max Valentine Learn more: https://oceana.ly/3KZ1CXQ

🗓️SAVE THE DATE: On 14 November, 16:00 - 17:30 CET Oceana in Europe is hosting a webinar to discuss illegal fishing and how businesses and NGOs can join forces to stop it. IUU fishing costs the global economy an estimated USD $20billion every year and is associated with labour and human rights abuses. Last week ORRAA with Global Fishing Watch and TMT, announced the release of Vessel Viewer 2.0, a new tool for insurers to use that provides information to inform decisions on whether to insure vessels, closing the net on illegal fishers and reducing risk exposure. Read more about Vessel Viewer here: https://lnkd.in/ei4JHCYZ We are excited to join Oceana in Europe, Global Fishing Watch and TMT to connect with experts from British Marine Insurance, Gard AS and LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) to discuss how we can drive positive change within the maritime sector. Greece: The first country in Europe to ban bottom trawling in all of its marine protected areas by 2030 Bottom trawling, a damaging fishing practice, will be phased out in Greece's national marine parks, with the largest ban set for 2026. This move is part of Greece's broader €780 million investment in marine protection, including the creation of two new marine parks and a goal to protect 30% of its ocean area by 2030.

Greece becomes first EU country to ban bottom fishing in marine protected areas. Bottom trawling involves dragging heavy fishing nets across the ocean floor, which can destroy habitats and even release carbon into the ocean and atmosphere. Though there are restrictions in place throughout Europe, this is the first outright ban in all of one country’s marine protected areas. Well Done! @Kyriakos Mitsotakis #OurOcean #OurOceanGreece #OurOceanConference https://buff.ly/3JEDfxX.

While it’s said that we cannot solve economic problems by making economics solution alone, “ship insurance” might be so far the most powerful means to tackle the rampant IUU fishing in the world. The profitability of the IUU activities is one of the main reasons that they continues till this day. As international fisheries is a high risk industry, vessel operators heavily rely on insurance reduce such risks. Since policies on the table so far couldn’t eradicate the problem, increasing the risk/cost of engaging IUU activities may change everything. The price cap on Russian war is also a case in point of the power of protection and indemnity (P&I) insurance.

Greece has announced that it will ban bottom trawling in all of its marine protected areas by 2030. The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that the country would become the first to end the damaging fishing practice in these protected areas. Bottom trawling will be banned in Greece’s three national marine parks by 2026, with the rest following before the end of the decade. Bottom trawling is a fishing practice that involves dragging heavy fishing nets across the ocean floor, destroying habitats, and releasing trapped CO2. While there have been restrictions in place in Europe for this practice, this is the first all-out ban. Source: https://bit.ly/3Up0OQc
