Om oss
Gard is a shipowner-controlled provider of P&I, marine and energy insurance products. Founded in Arendal in Norway, it is one of the largest marine insurers in the world, offering shipowners and operators, shipyards, contractors and energy companies a breadth and choice of products not available anywhere else in one place. For more than 100 years, we have been insuring the global maritime industries for their whole range of risks. Today, Gard is the world’s largest P&I club and the second largest marine insurer – employing nearly 700 people in 13 global offices. For our employees, our dynamic business model and commitment to employee development and training, mean that we can offer the opportunity to gain world-class expertise, international experience and the flexibility to move between disciplines and roles. Assuranceforeningen Gard was founded in 1907 in Arendal. Its foundation was driven by owners of sailing ships’ reluctance to subsidise the liabilities arising from steam operations. In 2003, Gard Marine & Energy was formed to extend the products offered by the group.

So far this year, the number of weather-related incidents off the coast of South Africa has reached the same level as the combined total for the last three years. Since October 2023, we have seen a massive shift in traffic away from the Red Sea, with most of the change happening after the seizure of the Galaxy Leader in November 2023. In relative terms, the greatest increase in the traffic has come from larger vehicle carriers and container vessels. Prior to the geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, hardly any vessels of this size took the route around the Cape. In our article, Siddharth Mahajan, Robert Dadson and Kim Thomassen Watle, CFA dive deeper into the weather-related and navigational risks associated with diverting off South Africa and highlight the areas where we see most accidents, the types of vessels most exposed, and the precautions shipowners and mariners should be taking when rerouting to this area. #southafrica #weather #marineinsurance #maritime #accidents #gard https://lnkd.in/eZdbBjvA

Roll-on/roll-off and tanker vessels will be added to the vessel types required to control their emissions while at berth in a California port from 1 January 2025. Since 2014, the California Resource Board (CARB) has regulated emissions from container, refrigerated cargo (reefer), and passenger vessels that visit certain state ports. The regulation covers emissions from container, reefer and passenger vessels, and now expands the requirements to more pollutants and vessel types. CARB determines the need for emission control regulation in each port based on the port’s annual vessel activity. #airemission #airpollution #california #marineinsurance #gard https://lnkd.in/eMRKuBD8

Last week, Gard participated in the Horizon meeting at the University of Agder (UiA). The session focused on showcasing how partnerships with UiA are helping us develop the right competencies to achieve our future organisational goals. By bridging the gap between academic studies and working life, we aim to tap into a talent pool of students who are ready to contribute and bring value to our organisation. This collaboration not only benefits Gard but the entire region, ensuring we all have access to the brightest and best skills as we grow together. 🚀 A big thanks to Cathrine Hopstock, head of Gard's Technology department, for sharing her insights. She understands first-hand the value of our UiA partnership, as we have trainees, interns and employees from UiA that are thriving in Gard today. Congratulations to the winners of Njord - The Autonomous Ship Challenge 2024. Gard is one of the sponsors of this annual challenge to successfully build and complete a series of tasks with an autonomous surface vehicle (ASV). This year’s Njord Challenge took place in Trondheim, Norway with participation of student teams from across the globe. Navier USN from Norway emerged as the winner, with Técnico Solar Boat from Portugal and AGH Solar Boat Team from Poland securing second and third places, respectively. Njord’s mission is to inspire students to become world leading engineers in maritime autonomous solutions. The international student-driven competition focuses on giving students the opportunity to challenge themselves and to put theory into practice, thereby gaining valuable experience along the way. Our sponsorship supports the competition by providing knowledge sharing, financial backing and the resources necessary to host the event. Gard’s Jarle Fosen, Senior Loss Prevention Executive, was at the event, and was able to share from some of the academic and industry research we participate in as well as some of the pilot projects we cover.

Our seminar in Geneva for our Charterers & Traders clients; ‘Today’s Risks, Tomorrow’s Fuels – Navigating Uncertainty’ was an eye-opening event, led by keynote speaker Jan Emblemsvåg, who highlighted nuclear power as the ultimate green solution to replace fossil fuels. Mikki Koskinen, CEO of ESL Shipping, shared ELS’s innovative business model, which includes building fossil-free, methanol-powered vessels to contribute towards the Nordic green transition and decarbonisation efforts. Michelle Wiese Bockmann's insightful findings on how the dark fleet, supported by certain flag states and insurers, poses a threat to environmental safety and society when marine casualties occur. The external presentations, coupled with those by our Gard colleagues Eleni Antoniadou, Adam Swierczewski, and Helena Biggs, complimented the topics addressed by external speakers. Discussions on Off-Specification Bunkers and ISO 8217:2024, FuelEU, and war risks and the "POLAR" case, along with the record number of attendees, made this event a great success. We look forward to celebrating our 20th anniversary in 2025! #geneva #charterers #traders #marineinsurance #gard

Cargo stowage failures are on the rise off South Africa. Ships that are avoiding the Red Sea by sailing around South Africa are exposed to the unforgiving seas around the Cape which have a reputation for stormy confused seas, large swells and rogue waves. Cargo stows on container, bulk, vehicle and general cargo vessels are particularly vulnerable to more extreme rolling and pitching. With several recent incidents of cargo stowage failure and container losses in the region there are fears of more to come. Close to 200 shipping containers were reportedly lost in the area between July and August of this year alone with further cases reported since. #southafrica #redsea #marineinsurance #maritime #gard ▶️ https://lnkd.in/ejc7BKut
