Did you know that the demand for food will double by 2050? Our CEO Thomas G. Schmidt and Barbara Taudorf Andersen will be in Folkemødet this week to discuss how to produce enough protein to feed the growing world population in the coming decades. Without giving too much away, we can share a few thoughts with you about what will be needed: 🥛 Selecting the proteins that the world needs most – for example, high-quality milk proteins. 🏭 Developing the best technologies to produce proteins via fermentation on an industrial scale – luckily, that's already being done in Denmark – guess who's on it! 👨🌾 Feedstock for fermentation, produced by Danish farmers. The microbes eat various forms of carbon in the fermentation tanks to make protein. And it would be great that: 🌍 Denmark supports the establishment of the first factories in Denmark, so Danish businesses can take part in a huge business adventure. Alternatively, the first factories will be established in the US, the Middle East and Asia, using Danish technology. 🚀 The EU and the Danish state ensure that proteins produced with fermentation technology are approved for food in Europe – quickly. Representative of the Danish democratic ambitions, #Folkemødet ('the People's Meeting') is a unique festival where citizens, decision-makers, NGOs and businesses gather to discuss, debate, share ideas and promote cooperation. 🍃SAVE THE DATE for the Annual BIOEAST Bioeconomy Conference on 6-7 March 2024 🌱The BIOEAST Initiative was given a new boost for the next three years with a new Horizon Europe project, called BOOST4BIOEAST (follow-up of the BIOEAST & BIOEASTsUP project), launched in January 2024. The project aims to mobilise and connect bioeconomy stakeholders with policymakers through national expert communities (BIOEAST HUBs) to strengthen their engagement in bioeconomy policy, research and innovation environments and to set-up long-lasting structures for cooperation and networking at national and macro-regional levels. 🌿To kick-start the community-building and establishment of the national BIOEAST HUBs, the BOOST4BIOEAST consortium and the BIOEAST Initiative jointly invite you to the Annual BIOEAST Bioeconomy Conference organised on 6-7 March on “The role of national HUBs in national and macro-regional bioeconomy policy and R&I developments in the BIOEAST countries” hosted by the Research Centre for Natural Sciences in Budapest, Hungary. August 2024 - Executive Director’s Report to MABA Members What lens will you use for our collective biosolids future?   The MABA leaders and members have had a busy and productive spring season with education and engagement across the region, and the harvest was ripe for the July Summer Symposium in Richmond. The event opened with the 3rd Annual Opening Reception, sponsored and supported by the MABA Young Professionals, followed by two days of informative sessions as well as a site tour at nearby Henrico County WRF. Additionally, we honored our biosolids champions of the region at the 2nd Annual MABA Recognition Awards Ceremony. The conference attendance was strong, and we had a record number of exhibitors and sponsors. Congratulations to the MABA board and committees for a job well done on the programming and organization of this event.   As we arrived at the symposium, it was important to ask ourselves, “What lens will I be using to take in this event and information?”  We each hold multiple roles, whether as an individual in the workplace, a member of MABA or as part of the greater biosolids sector. We needed to consider these roles as we considered the different lenses by which to view the symposium. Would a lens that affords the best view of the minute details serve best, or should we be trying to focus on the larger picture? With new information and connections to be acquired, could it be that a bifocal approach would allow for the greatest effect, both in our understanding and planning? My latest report to the Mid-Atlantic Biosolids Association members! "To understand why we selected the lenses we did for our symposium experience, we needed to also consider the future - both near and distant - and the actions that must take place to carry and build upon the success of the symposium and all it brings us. Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, "What you do speaks so loud that I cannot hear what you say." This is to say that it can be much easier to discuss great things, and much more difficult to make them happen - or more simply put, “Actions speak louder than words.” While action can be difficult to get started and see through to fruition, it is far more likely to succeed if it is empowered by knowledge and cooperation - two tools that were readily available at this year’s symposium."
