Time to drop the "defense wins championships" adage. *9/10 of the last ten Super Bowl teams were in the top 7 for offensive ranking (Expected Points Added per play), only 3 were in the top 7 for defense. *Of the past 5 winners, 4 were top 5 in offense, none were in the top 5 in defense. *Obviously better to be good in both, but top 5 offense seems to give you a much better chance of making the Super Bowl (7 of 25 teams) than top 5 defense (1 of 25 teams). While the Old Adage, Defense Wins Championships is less relevant today. It remains a key element in the Team Building Process. While Defense alone may not Win Championships, Defense is an important risk mitigation tool that counters high variance. For example in Cricket, Building a Robust Bowling Attack is your defense. The moment you play 4 Bowlers in a T20 Match, you are immediately inviting high variance. While important, Building a Strong Defense in theory is not enough. How you Build that Defense is equally important?
