Last week, as President of Medicines for Europe I had the chance to participate in one of the panels of the High-level Conference on the Future EU Health Union. I am very impressed by the priority the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council is giving to Health, this is important for Europe, for the European patients and for the European industry. We had a very interesting discussion on the Voluntary Solidarity Mechanism and the EU Stockpiling Strategy. Did you know that the compulsory stockpiling of 6 months currently applicable in Germany for certain antibiotics equals the annual consumption of 10 Member States? How can we work together and coordinate for equal and on-time access for all European patients? #EU2024BE #genericmedicines #europe #medicinesforeurope

The World Health Assembly session to decide on the Global Pandemic Treaty concluded on 01 June 2024 without an agreement due to inability to decide on the provisions of the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing (PABS) system. This is unfortunate. While everyone agrees on the principle of #fair and #equity based sharing of benefits arising from the use of resources and associated knowledge, the operationalization of these principles are always addressed differently by different sectors of stakeholders. Experiences from the negotiations and implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) will come handy to move forward the negotiations. With an extended timeline of one more year to conclude the negotiations, the World Health Assembly needs renewed efforts to bring different interests on access and benefit sharing together to the table and agree on the PABS with full and informed participation of all relevant stakeholders. #fairness #equity #access #benefitsharing #pandemic #priorinformedconsent #pandemicpreparedness #commercialbenefits
