What is Barrett's Oesophagus? Barrett’s Oesophagus occurs when persistent or long-term acid reflux damages the normal inner lining of the oesophagus. Over time, the lining of the oesophagus is damaged, the cells change, and abnormal cells can develop. It is not cancer but a pre-cancerous condition known as Barrett’s Oesophagus. A small number of people (less than 1%) with Barrett’s Oesophagus go on to develop Oesophageal Cancer. February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in Australia Every year, 1,800 Aussie women and a quarter-million globally face the devastating diagnosis of ovarian cancer. If diagnosed at Stage I or Stage II, the survival rates are >90%, but if diagnosed late, survival is only 29% beyond 5 years As most cases are diagnosed in advanced stages, more awareness and research for early detection, and treatment are needed. Early Detection = Better Outcomes! We spoke with HealthWell Foundation about how we're empowering people to stay ahead of cancer through prevention and early detection. Research suggests that up to 50% of cancer cases and about 50% of cancer deaths are preventable with the knowledge we have today. When non-profits collaborate, humanity wins. The American Association for Cancer Research The Lustgarten Foundation Swim Across America teamed together to award grant funding to Dr. Ajay Goel's research that will hopefully make progress in detection for pancreatic cancer which is the 3rd leading cause of death among cancer types. The early results of a study Dr. Goel and his City of Hope team published this week show a 97% accuracy for stage 1 and stage 2 pancreatic cancer detection. Early detection will give oncologists options when treating patients with pancreatic cancer vs. a near certain outcome of death.
