We were delighted to speak to The Children's Homes Association (The CHA) #ATimeForChange conference this morning. Niall Kelly talked to HMCI Sir Martyn Oliver and Yvette Stanley, National Director Regulation and Social Care, about: - our focus on the most vulnerable and disadvantaged - working with the sector in the interests of children - the need for more integration and services working together to close the gaps - understanding a provider’s individual context and circumstances - the response to the #OfstedBigListen #ChildrensHomes #ResidentialChildcare #Ofsted
Thank you for your important words of encouragement and acknowledgement about the social value and public service that is so evident across most of our sector - and the recognition of the complexity of work that we are involved in (and the notifications that can flow from managing these high needs/high risks) and where that differs to other types of providers in our system. Such a lot to take away from today and your time and contributions very much appreciated at this time of change opportunity
It was a positive discussion to be part of. I felt that Sir Martyn Oliver and yvette stanley were candid and authentic. I thank them both for this. Collaborative work between stakeholders usually includes areas of consensus and disagreement. What is most important is there is a spirit of partnership which can survive differences of opinion. The Children's Homes Association (The CHA) under Dr Mark Kerr are committed to engaging.
Joined up integrated support networks are required to ensure that the young people who are accommodated in Children’s Home are all supported with “real life skills to enable them to transition into living their lives without fear of the world around them. I worked in the sector for many years and my work ethic was always to provide the young people with support with their education and support to acquire life skills that they would need to live as independent individuals.
Very well put and couldn't agree more. As a person who is care experienced and also a professional of 30 years in the education, SEMH and care sector this has only ever been my way. As I've been there, the disadvantaged. One of your most vulnerable as a survivor of sexual exploitation and abuse. What I would love to see in all of our schools, residential children's homes and fostering is compulsory training around care experience understanding and disclosures. From an Expert by experience. I am the Director of a bespoke training company. With my wealth of experience and knowledge, I could taylor to each area. www.livinglegacylearning.co.uk check it out if you get a chance. I like to take the ego out of the system, the children will always come first. #changeiscoming

It was a very good session and gave me great hope for the future. I was very pleased to hear their commitment to supporting providers to work with the most vulnerable children, as they need us. Sir Martin Oliver and Yvette Stanley were also clear that they want an enduring relationship with providers.

3moExcellent, and very refreshing conversation - “Providers should be rewarded for taking children with high needs and high risk (complex), because they need the care and support.” “Ofsted and providers need to be on the same side, the side of the child” Thank you Ofsted 🙏
