This new National Hydrogen Strategy was developed through a collaboration with the Australian consultancy firm, GHD, alongside Fraunhofer CINES, a German research organization. The project will be focused on the local production capacity of low-carbon hydrogen within the Gulf State. The UAE is aiming to create ‘two hydrogen oases’ throughout a span of eight years, eventually reaching a total of five hydrogen oases by 2050. It's understandable that RMI became committed to hydrogen for energy in the 1990s and early 2000s. It was reasonable then to think that there wasn't an alternative and so the massive costs associated with the inefficient and ineffective energy carrier would be required. It's no longer an understandable and reasonable position. Amory Lovins' soft energy paths concept was a touch stone for me in the 1980s and has remained so with deep nuances added since. The Rocky Mountain Institute has done great work and continues to do great work. I deeply respect most of Lovin's work and would have loved to work with him. I'm somewhat saddened to feel required to post this. Lovins turned out to be wrong about hydrogen. That's okay. It's time for the RMI to let go of hydrogen for energy. Empirical reality has crushed the requirement for it and its ability to deliver. Lovins' was wrong about hypercars too. No one can be right all the time, and it's not disrespectful to quietly ignore the parts he got wrong. It's not dogma. Update: the RMI hydrogen lead tells me Lovins didn't sign off on this new initiative. It's all on current leadership, which makes me feel better. Like The International Council on Clean Transportation and other organizations, it's time to set aside the cognitive biases that prevent acceptance of 2020's reality. Batteries are vastly more fit for purpose than was expected, have plummeted in cost, have skyrocketed in densities, and multiplied in chemistries. Lean into that. The requirement for burnable fuels has been eaten by the radical expansion of electrification technologies. Lean into that. Green hydrogen has proven to be vastly more expensive than illusions of free electricity and cheap electrolyzers pretended. Distribution is expensive. Liquification is expensive. Accept it. The RMI is now spending too much time trying to justify bad energy decisions based on 20 year old evidence. It's unnecessary. It's wasteful. Further, due to the respect the RMI gets, it's actively harmful to effective forward movement on decarbonization. It's time to pivot to reality. #hydrogen #reality #energy #economics
