Last week, our Under-Secretary-General and High Representative Rabab Fatima attended the International High-Level Forum on Landlocked Developing Countries on Food Security and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) organised jointly by the Government of Uzbekistan and FAO on 5 to 6 September in Tashkent. The Forum gathered key actors in LLDCs and supporting international institutions to share experiences, discuss common challenges and explore collaborative solutions and partnerships. The Forum ended with strong optimism for achieving SDG2 in LLDCs and UN-OHRLLS is grateful for the immense support for LLDCs as we get closer to LLDC3 in Gaborone which will be a once-in-a-decade opportunity for LLDCs to explore solutions to their unique challenges, and forge partnerships to unlock their full potential. Heads of Government and State, together with leaders from civil society, the private sector, youth, and other partners, will agree on a new programme of action to transform the livelihoods of over half a billion people living in landlocked developing countries globally. In addition to ten plenary sessions, the official programme will be accompanied by several pre-conference events, five thematic roundtables, and special forums focusing on different stakeholders. A first reaction to the terms #accountability and #governance may be 😖 or 🥱 ... but it's critical to understanding everything else that you may be more interested in, whether that's infrastructure 🏗 , education 🏫 , health 🏥 etc. Why? Because everything we do, or work in, is part of a #system 🕸 , and each system is different and constantly changing. Unfortunately, there is often a tendency to take a #reductionist approach to issues, relying on specialists to identify the practices 'that should work', because they are in textbooks 📓 and reports, and may have tentatively worked elsewhere. Strategies, programs and the like may reference the term 'systems' without actually really doing anything about it. So let's have more #collectivelearning and #collectiveaction. 📣 Working in the #SolomonIslands, or just interested in how governance is not always how you may know it from 'back home'? Then..... ➡ Have a read of this really interesting report 🙌 (at least the Executive Summary 🎉), and ➡Have a think 🤔 of what it may mean for your work, and ➡Start a discussion with your colleagues, stakeholders, etc. and ask questions, start a discussion.... the more we understand systems, the more we can understand what may work, and what is unlikely to work, and more importantly, that change takes a long time ⏱ #internationaldevelopment #design #systemsthinking
Wondering about accountable governance in Solomon Islands? The Centre has been working with UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji’s EU-funded ‘Vaka Pasifika’ project over the last year to understand the political economy of accountability ecosystems in the Pacific. Our first country report on Solomon Islands, authored by Ali Tuhanuku and Aidan Craney is out – other country studies coming soon. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gbEu3G8q To find out more about our work on accountability ecosystems in the Pacific, check out: https://lnkd.in/gQtwye7j
