Our Under-Secretary-General and High Representative, Rabab Fatima, joined UN Secretary-General António Guterres on a mission to the Pacific Islands. They visited Samoa, Tonga, Timor-Leste, and New Zealand, bringing the spotlight to the immense challenges and the resilience of Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS). USG Fatima praised the Pacific leadership, and the steadfastness that the Islands, and all SIDS, have shown in the fight for climate justice and urgent climate action. Witnessing firsthand the harsh realities of climate change and its devastating impact on small island states was a poignant reminder of the urgency of our collective action. This visit underscored the UN's solidarity with the Pacific Islands and all SIDS. As the office mandated with advocating for special country groups, including SIDS, UN-OHRLLS remains dedicated to supporting Pacific SIDS in achieving the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, advancing the SDGs, and implementing the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS). The situation in Pacific nations such as Kiribati is alarming. The sea levels around some of the islands are rising at a rate four times higher than in other parts of the world. Commenting on the recent Pacific Islands Forum in Tonga, George Carter (Salā Dr George Carter) highlighted the urgency for action: "We've heard so many statements by Pacific leaders, and moreover, you hear it in the stories, the lived experience of people. This is now beyond adaptation. This is lost land." Learn more: https://loom.ly/Ydz1cDU

🌍 Happy Earth Day! 🌿✨ Today, let's celebrate the power of diplomacy in safeguarding our precious planet. Here are 5 compelling reasons why diplomacy is crucial for protecting the Earth: 1️⃣ International Cooperation: Diplomacy fosters collaboration among nations, enabling collective action on global environmental challenges like climate change and biodiversity loss. 2️⃣ Peaceful Resolutions: Diplomatic efforts help resolve conflicts over natural resources, ensuring peaceful solutions and sustainable management of Earth's ecosystems. 3️⃣ Conservation Agreements: Through diplomacy, nations negotiate and implement agreements such as the Paris Agreement and the Convention on Biological Diversity, promoting conservation efforts worldwide. 4️⃣ Sustainable Development: Diplomacy drives the adoption of sustainable development goals, balancing economic growth with environmental protection for a more resilient and equitable future. 5️⃣ Environmental Justice: Diplomatic initiatives address environmental injustices, advocating for marginalized communities disproportionately affected by pollution and climate change. Together, through diplomatic efforts, we can create a greener, healthier planet for generations to come! 🌱💙 #EarthDay #DiplomacyForEarth

Small island developing states are on the frontlines of climate change and natural resource scarcity, already facing the extremes of sea level rise, unpredictable weather events, and environmental degradation that millions more will face tomorrow. Yet they also are pioneers, innovating and demonstrating what is possible in a shift to a nature-positive future, write the heads of UNDP and Global Environment Facility, Achim Steiner and Carlos Manuel Rodriguez https://lnkd.in/e6xVyJKh

We are pleased to announce the task force’s official name. We are the Global Solidarity Levies Task Force: For People and the Planet. By 2030, developing countries (excluding China) must mobilize $2.2 trillion each year to meet climate finance commitments and limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, as set out in the #ParisAgreement. But right now, the poorest countries and communities are suffering the worst effects of #climatechange while contributing the least to the problem. The task force’s mandate is to change this by finding equitable sources of #climatefinance that make the biggest polluters contribute fairly. That’s why we’re bringing together a coalition of willing countries, undertaking extensive research and advancing political will for solidarity levies that can be implemented around the world. THE MAY ACTION OF THE MONTH IS LIVE! This month's focus? The High Seas Treaty with special partners @highseasalliance The new High Seas Treaty will safeguard life in the entire ocean beyond countries’ national jurisdictions. It is the global opportunity to finally address the many governance gaps that have plagued the ocean and left it vulnerable to overexploitation for decades. Governments formally adopted the High Seas Treaty in June. But for it to become law, it must be ratified by at least 60 countries. We need that to happen fast so that we can ramp up international action to protect our shared ocean, mitigate climate breakdown, and safeguard the lives and livelihoods of billions of people worldwide. Our ask to you? Ask governments to Ratify the High Seas Treaty Now: https://buff.ly/3UtOUEy

'The world is turning its attention to our Blue Pacific Continent' Minister Ralph Regenvanu of #Vanuatu underscores the need for a moratorium on #DeepSeaMining at the International Seabed Authority. We need more political leaders like him to protect our ocean from a devastating new industry. 👇 ⭕ 'We are unequivocally bound by our obligations under international agreements and commitments such as the #SDG14, the #KunmingMontrealGlobal #BiodiversityFramework of the CBD, the #BBNJ Treaty, the #ParisAgreement of the UNFCCC, and the #ConventionOnMigratorySpecies. #DeepSeaMining would directly #contradict these commitments we have made in each of these conventions, and also the future of humanity and the planet.' ⭕ 'another critical element to my delegation is our #IndigenousPeople in the Pacific - they possess both a tangible and an intangible cultural connection to the Pacific Ocean. […] This intangible heritage contributes to #SocialCohesion, a Pacific identity, and a deep responsibility which connects us to our communities and region.' ⭕ 'The ocean is not only the world’s largest carbon sink, but is also far too precious to be #jeopardized with new industrial activities that could potentially lead to serious and #IrreversibleHarm.' ⭕ 'Financial exploitation of our Ocean may be beneficial for the next decade for our nations, but it could be #devastating for the #FutureGenerations who have to carry forward our Pacific legacy of being climate and ocean stewards. We need to do right by them.' 'We are deeply interconnected to our Oceans. When you make your deliberations in the coming days, please think beyond your national boundaries and think as custodians of our Ocean and the real threat mining the seabed poses for the Pacific region.' #DEFENDtheDEEP #StopDeepSeaMining

Really interesting paper, focused on the importance of prioritizing human rights in EU's approach to climate-migration and climate justice -two concepts that I personally rarely see being brought up in the Migration agenda-.
