Career fairs are great events that provide opportunities to connect in-person with potential employers and learn about different companies that you might want to work for. I really like OFE - Opportunities for Employment's recommendations for a step-by-step approach to career fair success which I have shared below. 1) Research, Research, Research Investigate beforehand the companies who will be attending the Career Fair. Do your homework and research online to learn about the mission, values, and recent achievements of those companies you are interested in working for. 2) Map out your Day Get the map of the exhibitor hall and plan your route. Prioritize the companies you want to visit. Aim for quality interactions over quantity. It is better to target your efforts on your top ten employers, than hand out a resume to every booth. 3) Your Personal Pitch Know what type of job you are looking for and be prepared to answer questions. Practice your “Personal Pitch” and know exactly what you want to tell employers about yourself. In less than 30 seconds, you need to highlight your relevant skills, experience and training for the job. Practice with a friend or in front of a mirror. 4) First Impressions Matter Dress as though you are going to an interview. Be ready, you may be interviewed on the spot. Present yourself confidently, making eye contact and extending a firm hand shake. Ensure your resume is updated and professional-looking and bring multiple copies. 5) Question Time Compile a list of appropriate questions. Do not ask about compensation, company benefits, pensions or preferred work hours. Instead, ask questions about the position or company and stay focused on how you can contribute to the company’s success. 6) Have a Follow-Up Strategy Request the person’s business card or LinkedIn profile. After the fair, send a thank-you message and ask for an opportunity to meet with the employer to discuss possible employment. Being prepared and making a positive first impression will help you stand out from other job seekers at a career fair. Good Luck! #job fairs are always a great opportunity to meet and connect with potential employers and decision makers. 3 quick tips to help you make the best of career fairs: 1. Update, print out and take your resumes along. 2. Dress as you'd like to be addressed. Dress professionally or business casual. Comfort is also key! 3. Identify key companies you have in mind, prepare intelligent questions to ask. 4. Engage with company representatives, and fellow job seekers. Don't be shy about sharing information about your skills and experiences. This is a great opportunity to build and expand your network. 5. Always seek to exchange contact details where possible. Worse case, get contact details and be sure to ask "is it okay if I connect with you at a later time, I'd love to learn more about....". That way you get a chance to continue the conversation beyond that day. Who knows your next job might just be waiting for you here. Keep an open mind and seek to explore.
