This week is RACE equality week! The first Race Equality Week was held in February 2021, launching with the theme #LetNotGoBackToNormal, Last year the theme was #ItsEveryonesBusiness - when you think about it, tackling race inequality should be everyone’s business. This year its #ListenActChange, so ask yourself, what part do you play in tackling race inequality at work and in your social groups? Do you play a consistently active role or play a part on occasions when its convenient or hardly ever? Ask yourself these questions and reflect, you can use these as discussion points at team meetings: 1. When you or your team organise social activities, how often are everyone’s opinions, concerns and beliefs taken into account? 2. Have you ever heard or spoken to someone and made assumptions based on their accent? 3. In your social groups and work networks how many people are from ethnically diverse backgrounds? 4. Have you ever avoided sitting next to someone based on how you perceived their race, religion, or ability? 5. Have you ever specified someone’s race when it was not necessarily relevant, for example, referring to someone as ‘a black Engineer’ or ‘Asian nurse’? We all have a role to play in the fight for racial equality in the workplace, are you ready to #ListenActChange?

This Race Equality Week, we've embraced the theme of #ListenActChange. We've listened to our colleagues, acted on their feedback, and implemented positive changes. But change starts with each of us. That's today we invited our colleagues to make a commitment to action through the Big Promise. Some of the things that colleagues have promised from across the firm include: * Calling out racism and microaggression when they encounter it. * Expand and diversity their network with people from other backgrounds. * Learn and proactively act anti-racist. * Offer ideas and suggestions for how we can improve within the firm. As well as a range of meaningful commitments from senior leaders within the firm. We invite WM colleagues who have taken part so share their promises below - if they wish. As Race Equality Week draws to a close, we're reminded that our journey towards inclusivity doesn't end here. This week we celebrate Race Equality Week. An annual UK-wide movement uniting thousands of organisations and individuals to address the barriers to racial equality in the workplace. This year’s message is #ListenActChange, which means everyone should: 1. Listen to what needs to be fixed. 2. Do something based on what we learn. 3. Help make changes to end unfairness because of race. If we all focus on #ListenActChange, we can make real progress. Over the course of the week our EmbRace Network will be inviting colleagues to join the 5-day Challenge!
