Just another Manic Monday? A study in the July issue of the AORN Journal looks at how busy operating rooms are on different days of the week. The research looks back at data to see if there were any differences in how much ORs are used each day. The study also explores why this might happen and how much it costs the hospital. • Mondays had the highest OR utilization rate (The overall average was 69.1% daily). • Mondays saved the day in terms of late starts---the fewest minutes lost were on Mondays. • Thursdays and Fridays tended to be the villains of efficiency. Takeaway: Perioperative leaders hold the compass to success. By monitoring OR utilization and identifying sources of variability, they can help chart the course towards consistency, slashing costs, and amplifying revenue. In the May 2024 Sentinel article, I highlight the Oregon State Board of Nursing organizational value of "Simplicity" to reduce barriers to clear communication and streamline processes. Since my tenure at OSBN, we have worked to improve our customer service and address licensee concerns. OSBN’s Communication methods have needed to be improved since data systems were changed in 2022. To rectify this, we are pleased to reinstate license renewal reminders for 30-60-90 days via direct email outside our database. This step is a testament to our commitment to our organizational value, Simplicity, reducing barriers to clear communication and and streamlined processes. It is impossible to imagine a world without them, yet often their role is underestimated. But is the purpose of International Nurses Day just about saying “thank you, nurses”? This year’s theme, OUR NURSES = OUR FUTURE, THE ECONOMIC POWER OF CARE tells us it’s more than that. Nurses are not just healthcare providers; it goes beyond that. They play a central role in health outcomes and the economic stability of societies. Changing our perceptions and strategic investment in nursing can bring economic and social benefits like improved patient outcomes, reduced hospitalisation times and overall healthcare savings.
