So, instead of just surviving, you're thriving. I'm your host, Olivia Chadwick. Thanks for being here. Okay, this is pretty hard to believe, but this is the launch of The Wellness Compass! What is the vision for The Wellness Compass? Are we in alignment with how we think about health? I want to share with you some of my philosophies that are in part a journey through academia, but mostly a journey through my life to share what has led me to certain philosophies and beliefs. If you're here, you're probably in alignment with these concepts. Or, if you're not in alignment with these ideas, they might be completely new to you and might illuminate new things. In this episode, I'm going to share with you my positioning within the podcast as the person who created the vision and as the person who you're going to be spending every episode with. For the last 20 years, I've been working as an exercise physiologist. I have a Master's in kinesiology, within the social sciences. I am completely fascinated and knowledgeable about everything regarding exercise science, understanding the body really well, how it functions, how we get it to perform well, and how to optimize it, so we're constantly feeling our best. The heart of what I am really into and wanting to go deeper in, especially as I get older, is the complex nature of health, the complex nature of human bodies. When I first went out in the world as an exercise physiologist, I thought it was enough just to be really knowledgeable about science and be really skilled in the way that I applied science with people. What I really realized quite quickly, actually, within the work, was that my skills as a coach needed a massive upgrade. I really needed to understand human beings, why they were coming to me, what was really motivating them, why they were feeling poorly. This perspective or this experience led me to get really interested in human psychology. And beyond human psychology, really understanding mental health and emotional health, and beyond emotional health and mental health is another layer that I've found to be incredibly helpful on this journey of understanding. Over the past year, I've made a major misstep in my business, and it's had an unfortunate impact on your health. So, what's this error I'm talking about? My mission was crystal clear: to assist you in achieving holistic well-being, breaking free from the grip of diet and hustle culture, and embarking on the healing journey to feel secure in your own skin. Here's the insider information that no one has shared with you, not even me, until now:If your exercise routine is primarily aimed at improving health, and let’s face it, it really should be, there's a crucial aspect you might be missing out on: cardiovascular health. And why is this omission genuinely concerning? Because: - Cardiovascular fitness can add over a decade to your lifespan. - Cardiovascular fitness surpasses quitting smoking in terms of health benefits. In other words, prioritizing exercise over quitting smoking is a more beneficial health choice. - To put it bluntly, poor cardiovascular fitness is a graver health risk than smoking! - When it comes to lifestyle behaviours, improving cardiovascular fitness offers the most significant health benefits, surpassing even nutrition and stress management. - Cardiovascular fitness has a positive impact on all leading causes of mortality, from diabetes to cardiovascular disease, hypertension, cancer (all types), kidney disease, and more.
