🌌 The day has come… May the fourth be with you 🌌 Have you ever thought of Star Wars from a tech point of view? 💻 While some people see it only as a sci-fi saga, others find in it a portal to the future of technology 👀 Okay, that might be an overstatement, but there’s a link with our tech universe somehow. 💡 When you think about it, some of the advanced technologies that appeared in the movies turned out to be in development back then. 💭 📡For instance, let’s take the Galactic Personal Digital Assistant that evolves throughout the movies. The goal was to foster interconnectivity and access to information, which aligns with the tech industry’s aspirations. 👾 Another example is the use of cloned soldiers. Although it didn’t foster the development of clones in the real world, it definitely contributed to the conversation around the ethical implications. 🤖 Last but not least, the droids in the movies can handle complex human interactions. Even though they don’t have such abilities (yet), today’s AI-powered technologies aim to do the same and grasp human complexity better. It is indeed the most needed discussion. I strongly feel there is a need to address climate change as an emergency and look at the role AI could play especially in agriculture, use of harmful pesticides for production of food, food security from the lenses of gender equity and traditional food practices of the Global South and disaster situations alike. It's safe to say that November has been an exciting and busy month for #uktech. Here are a few of the headlines which I have been occupying myself with: 👉 I am currently looking forward to the UK's 2023 Global Investment Summit (GIS) on Monday, where 200 international CEOs will showcase the frontline of innovation in AI, Quantum, and Advanced Manufacturing, and demonstrate once more why the UK is a world-leading destination for tech investments. 👉 This month, the UK also hosted the AI Safety Summit at the historical Bletchley Park, marking the world's first global summit on AI. The resulting Bletchley Declaration, signed by the 28 countries represented at the summit, states their commitment to collectively ensure that AI is used in a human-centric, trustworthy, and responsible way. 👉 Finally, closer to home for those of us at the British Embassy The Hague, was the UK-NL Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in quantum science and technologies. The MoU sets the stage for joint breakthroughs in both academic and private sector research, and ensures close collaboration between two highly innovative countries in a field so critical to the future. If ever there was a month in recent memory that showcased the UK's leading role in the world of tech, as both an innovator and prime destination for growth, it has been November.
