Emotional Skills for Gen Z I use these social and emotional skills in my own teaching as underpinned by my research and frameworks. Examples: 1.) How I taught preservice teachers in Initial Teacher Education (ITE). Please see book chapter in Springer- Empowering preservice teachers: Perhaps being an influencer is a good thing? In Empowering teachers and democratising schooling: Perspectives from Australia --Steven Kolber Keith Heggart 2.) The Numeracy Project- How I taught numeracy with Years 1-8. We went on to win a 3 year Schools Plus partnership for a low SES school on the central coast of NSW-- Australian Schools Plus 3.) The Upper Hand online course for Stage 6 targeting human trafficking. These skills influenced how I approached the curriculum in partnership with Amanda Giles Craig Giles The UPPER HAND course link: https://lnkd.in/gyPqxssD #empowerment #trust #inclusion #assertiveness #creativity #empathy #emotions #selfcontrol #maths #STEM #5Cs #endmodernslavery #education #curriculum #getfreefilm

This is an important insight, to show how fundamental employability skills for student success, are being developed through activities at school and in the community. But the report is also highlighting a clear set back in the number of students having access and ability to engage in extra and co-curricular activities. There are two important questions to ask here: 1. What can we do to improve access for students from vulnerable and disadvantaged backgrounds? 2. How do integrate initiatives that help students learn the vocabulary to articulate the skills and qualities learned from these activities - thereby enhancing clear and confident self expression? I would love to heard your insights and ideas!

🌍 Empowering Young Minds Beyond the Classroom! At Aflatoun, we believe that learning extends far beyond textbooks and classrooms. The latest OECD Survey on Social and Emotional Skills highlights a critical insight: relatively few students engage in extra-curricular activities, yet these activities are powerful drivers of social and emotional development. By participating in Aflatoun programmes, where we include all Active Learning Methods connected with arts, sports, and experiencing knowledge young people cultivate essential skills like: ▶️Assertiveness – building confidence to express themselves ▶️Sociability – strengthening relationships and teamwork ▶️Creativity – unlocking innovation and new ideas ▶️Curiosity – encouraging lifelong learning and exploration We integrate life skills education into our programmes, helping young people discover their potential and create change in their communities. Together, we can help bridge the gap and ensure that no one misses out on the chance to develop these crucial skills. #extracurriculumactivities OECD#survey #reflection #CAS #IBDP ✅ IBDP students sometimes take for granted the fact that IBDP education encourages them through #CAS projects to work on their #Creativity-#Activity-#Service. Indeed, #CAS course gives our DP students agency, and both emotional and intellectual growth. ✅ In our high school service learning and community service start off in MYP Phase 4 (1st class of high school), where our students can develop social skills. ✅ Have a look and analyze the results of #Findings from the OECD Survey on #Social and #Emotional Skills 2023: Credits: OECD Education and Skills https://lnkd.in/dYfXWBxe

More confirmation of the value of multifaceted learning experiences for students. Schools can and should be considered high-value partners in the holistic development of young people. All schools (and the government and non-government organisations by which they may be governed), should invest heavily in robust and enriching co-curricular programs that cater for diverse student interests. Co-curricular involvement and the connection and belonging that students feel when they engage in it, also provides high-level protective factors against poor mental and physical health. No-brainer, really. If you are interested in reading the report there are a number of other insights into social and emotional learning that are interesting. Very useful for school leaders.

Timely insights from OECD Education and Skills' statisticians on developing teachers' and students' mindsets on the teachability of social and emotional skills across the curriculum, through support and engagement in extra-curricular activities. Also identifying the size of the effect is evidence supporting the pastoral care, pathway and portfolio management of co-curricular and extra-curricular recognition, assessments, and reporting, including student agency and student voice.
