How much should countries spend on education? More expenditure per student typically correlates with improved outcomes… …but only up to a point, after which additional investment shows little impact on performance. For example: ▶️ Japanese 15-year-olds’ mathematics scores are higher than those of their US peers... ▶️ Even though Japan spends about 30% less per student aged 6 to 15 than the United States. The most significant inequalities in education are related to students’ socio-economic backgrounds. But this isn’t just about money. The socioeconomic status of children and young adults depends on their parents’ education, their jobs, and on the resources available at home. When comparing education systems on a global scale, the challenge is to come up with ways of measuring this that transcend cultural differences and stay relevant over time. For example, is the number of books at home still as important as some 25 years ago, now that many avid readers use ebooks? Since this is so complex to measure and define from one country to another, PISA researchers are constantly examining and evaluating the quality of the indicators that go into these calculations. This paper presents new research on how PISA is measuring socio-economic status across borders 👉 https://lnkd.in/dQnpNicG Francesco Avvisati #SocioeconomicStatus #PISA #Education

High-quality early childhood education and care is one of the best investments a country can make in its future. I recently visited 19 Mayıs Mehmet Emin Sungur kindergarten in Türkiye- a play-based experiential kindergarten that brings together some of the city’s wealthiest and poorest families. Ensuring fair access to these types of child-centred pedagogies is essential for closing the learning gap and ensuring all children can succeed in a school environment. “People are still just trying to pour knowledge in - as opposed to thinking about how students can think and develop their brains.” - Nobel Prize winner Carl Wieman on science teaching. Professor Emeritus of Physics and Education at Stanford University, Carl Wieman, and Yidan Prize winner, explains what schools can be doing better.
