Opportunity. Today is the last day to apply for the next cohort! In the words of my great grandmother Josephine Little Hurst, “don’t tarry too long in doubt, you got to move”. There are many meaningful things I learned as a member of #cohortVI with BLCK VC institute. One that replays in my head consistently is that ‘if I have the fundamentals in place I can make my vision a reality.’ #BVI gives you the fundamentals of #venturecapital and a network of brilliant professionals to help you execute.

I’m happy to be rejoining the TSCPA. I’ve been incredibly focused on information systems, cybersecurity, process analysis, data analytics, and AI, but I will always be grateful for my ability to convey these important topics in the language of business. Having a CPA makes communicating with management a breeze. I love reframing these topics as value drivers rather than cost centers. #tscpa #cpa #ciso #vciso

What does the belief that work is important and it has to be hard to to us who believe it? It creates a centerpiece in our life—a career. This is a mixed blessing. On the positive side, it means that we have meaningful work to provide to society. We feel valued and useful. We advance civilization, hopefully, with our contribution. We are rewarded for bringing value to the world. And because we expect it to be hard, we can do hard things. This is a huge advantage in our society. But there is a cost. Our career does not have to be our life. It is a part of our life but it is not the only part. Some of those other parts of life, like friends and family, artistic pursuits, volunteer service, spirituality, and simply having fun, are valuable. I’ve credibly believed I was on my deathbed three times so far, causing me to reflect on my life. Interestingly, my career was the furthest from my mind as I judged whether I used the life that I was given. In the mid-1990s, I was helping my father get to chemotherapy appointments. We were at Sloan-Kettering cancer center in New York City. I was about to finish law school and move west. He was fighting for his life. There were young child patients all around, some wearing headscarfs to conceal their little bald heads. I was reading the New York Times obituaries, which I never do. There was an obituary for a lawyer. The story was filled with professional accomplishments and ended with a quote from him. It went something like “I was glad to be a lawyer and work on many cases. A lawyer is like a fork. It can do many different things as long as it is sterilized between uses.” Maybe this person was a great success—but didn’t he just admit he was a tool? The contrast been that quote and the sight of kids just trying to hang on for a few more months could not have been more striking. If it worked for him-great. How do you want your obituary to read?

Great to be back again serving as emcee at the 17th Annual Hearts of Texas Luncheon, honoring Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Randy Bowman, Community Partners of Dallas and the Lewisville ISD. Volunteerism transforms lives! Thanks to Volunteer Now CEO, Rachel Currie Triska, for inspiring her incredible team. Americans gave 4.1 billion hours of service to humanity as volunteers last year. There's nothing more impactful than making a difference in the lives of those who need it most. As I share in my keynote address: "Live your life as a go-getter, yet, forever share your life as a go-giver."
