June is cataract awareness month.
Our senses are integral to understanding the World around us and how we communicate with it, with approximately 80 percent of all our impressions being perceived by our sight. According to the international agency for the prevention of blindness 43 million people in the World are living with blindness and 295 million with moderate to severe visual impairment of which 77% of these are preventable or treatable, cataracts accounting for almost 40% of global blindness (almost 100 million people).
The word cataract originates from the Greek word cataracta which means waterfall, and is in reference to when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy. When this clear and sophisticated lens stops working like it should, we start to experience change in colour perception with the world appearing more dull, blurring of vision, distortion and glare from lights. It affects us from a visual point of view but also deprives us of our independence, affecting our physical and mental wellbeing.
We can certainly slow down the progression of cataracts by protecting against excessive UV light exposure, eating a healthy balanced diet high in antioxidants, stopping smoking, exercise and managing health conditions like diabetes.
Many in the world do not have the luxury of accessing surgery for cataracts, a relatively quick (10-20 minutes on average) and extremely effective procedure that is truly life changing. Orbis InternationalOrbis UK are doing incredible work in providing communities with the relevant skills and resources to treat cataracts. This is in the form of wet lab and virtual reality simulation to upskill clinicians and their surgical skills, face to face lectures, webinars and remote consultations to provide the highest standard of training.
Let us be grateful for our health and how lucky we are when it comes to accessing the best care when we need it the most. Let us do what we can to help reduce this inequality in the World by raising awareness of how to improve processes, be a part of the training and mentoring or just supporting charitable organisations so that those in need like Lucia continue to get the care they deserve, and gain back their happiness and independence.

More than 1 billion people in the world live with unaddressed vision impairments of some sort, and Seva Foundation, a global nonprofit eye care organization that works with local communities around the world, is looking to combat that.
A recent paper from the organization says that, when prioritized, eye health could yield $36 in benefits for every $1 spent, meaning every dollar spent on refractive error or cataract correction produces $36 in benefits. This is 6 times greater than the typical $6 return seen in other development interventions. The 2 highest returns outside eye care were seen in nutrition and noncommunicable diseases, which were at 13 to 1 and 9 to 1, respectively.

Today is World Glaucoma Day – an important day to raise awareness about glaucoma, which is the second most common cause of blindness globally.
This year’s theme of World Glaucoma Week is “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World,” which focuses on bringing communities worldwide to fight together against glaucoma blindness. Help us raise awareness worldwide and learn more about glaucoma.

Jaundice affects up to 80% of newborns in the US and Europe. While typically a manageable condition, some infants are at greater risk due to underlying hemolytic conditions. The CoSense ETCOc Test is a non-invasive, accurate measure of hemolysis through End-Tidal Carbon Monoxide (ETCO) testing, offering a simple automated breath test that measures the 1:1 ratio of carbon monoxide to unconjugated bilirubin. This innovative approach is recognized by leading experts as the "Gold Standard Test" for diagnosing and quantifying hemolysis in neonates and infants.

🔍 𝗡𝗼𝗻-𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: CoSense uses a gentle nasal cannula to collect a breath sample and deliver accurate diagnostic results at the bedside. This non-invasive method does not require a blood test, making it a stress-free experience for newborns and more convenient for healthcare providers.
🔧 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝘀𝗲: Equipped with a Precision Sampling Set, the device is simple to connect and requires no calibration, making it user-friendly for healthcare professionals.
⏱️ 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀: Delivers hemolytic status in less than five minutes, enabling timely and effective clinical decisions.
With endorsements from top neonatologists and inclusion in clinical guidelines, the CoSense Monitor is setting new standards in neonatal care. We are proud to spotlight Capnia's contributions and look forward to the continued impact of this innovative technology.

Endometriosis awareness month. Facts from @TheRCN:
1.5m people are affected in the UK
It might take up to 8 years to diagnosis it
It costs around £8.2bn to the UK economy
It would be quite remarkable to see more research dedicated to diagnosing endometriosis earlier and exploring effective treatments. This podcast offers fascinating insights that can provide clinicians with valuable information for diagnosing and managing the disease.
