WEALTH WEDNESDAY: TIP 153 This is my favourite tip every single year, and it's less about saving money, and more about saving your sanity and avoiding retail shopping as things get hectic at the shops. If your silly season is starting soon, buy all your alcohol online in one go now. Benefits to this are: 1. You'll save plenty of time by not having to detour to the grog shop on the way to that BBQ/lunch/event. 2. You're more likely to buy alcohol you actually enjoy, rather than just getting whatever beer/wine is at the shop and drinking for the sake of it. 3. It's much easier to find your favourites on special through different sites, rather than just walking in and hoping you'll stumble across a half-decent sale. 4. It makes it much easier to know how much you actually drink during the silly season, especially if you need to head back to the shops before Christmas. 5. Less retail shopping at this time of year = win. Enjoy.

Raise your hand if you had pie on the 4th of July! 🙋♀️ This year the Pie category is down -6% in dollars and volume. A few snapshots from 2023: 🥧 In the 2 weeks around the 4th of July in 2023, the pie category grew 9% in dollars and 31% in volume over the previous year 🥧 Last year, apple fruit pies led the category in sales and grew an additional 9% in dollars over the previous year 🥧 Of all fruit pies, blackberry experienced the largest growth, posting 112% lift vs the previous year 🥧 Outside of fruit Pies, chocolate cream (-6% dollar lift) and open face pumpkin (+4% dollar lift) lead the category in sales We'll see if the pie category spikes during the weeks surrounding the holiday this year. Getting ready to go on vacation? Hit the beach? Throw a 4th of July barbeque bash? Throughout the summer I’ll be providing seasonal personal finance tips through a #MondayswithMarc series of posts. Like many of you, I was looking for a large body of water last weekend to escape the heat. I have Mediterranean skin, so sunscreen isn’t always top of mind. But as I age, wrinkles are a concern, so I headed to a drugstore to buy an extremely overpriced bottle of SPF 50. Tip 1: Plan in advance! Many retailers offer steep discounts on summer products at the beginning of the season and large providers like Amazon, Walmart, and Kroger often offer lower prices than smaller (convenient) stores. Don’t forget about your local dollar stores who also tend to offer highly discounted household products (think plates, cups, napkins for that barbeque)! While you’re planning for your 4th of July or other summer feast, don’t forget to shop the sales! Many supermarkets have rotating deals on burgers/ ground beef, hot dogs (my favorite), buns, condiments, soft drinks, and more! Load up the freezer and stock up when items are on sale. Bonus, a fully stocked freezer actually uses less energy! Here are a few ways to save money on Thanksgiving. Instead of buying expensive decorations, have your kids make them. To create a beautiful centerpiece, go outside and gather pinecones. You can also find nice decorations at the dollar store. When it comes to beverages, they are expensive, so offer fewer drink options. Lastly, buy generic or house brands when grocery shopping. I always tell myself "I'll go Maccies for lunch and have a salad or a grilled chicken wrap" before crying 15 mins later on the A50 after I've smashed out a large Big Mac meal & double cheeseburger. Maccies saw a positive impact on their overall sales, including burger sales, when they introduced salads and other healthier options to their menu. It attracted a set of new healthier customers and buyers like me who love the illusion of choice. If you want to be dancing like my man below and you sell any products online, you need to make sure at checkout you're offering multiple delivery options. We all like free/cheap delivery, but if I'm in Aus and I can choose a free 8-13 day postal option or an Express 2-4 day for $20 - My chimp brain is getting my goods faster and leaving me arguing with my Mrs about my spending later.
