Headline to start the day: a new version of The Construction Playbook is due this Summer. Adoption is still a challenge, is better resourcing or a Construction Playbook ‘lite’ the answer? Long-term investment or some quick wins? I’d say a mixture of both.
The doors to our Wates House Pavilion are now open for Day 2 at UKREiiF! The team are excited to kick off another busy day of panel sessions and networking opportunities, starting with a discussion chaired by Wates Group Public Sector Director, Stephen Beechey. We kicked things off at 9.30am with a frank and engaging discussion around 'The Construction Playbook - still the path to a better future?' Day 2 also includes a packed line up of thought-provoking panel sessions unpicking challenging topics including what it takes to deliver successful public / private sector partnerships (11am) to sustainably shaping the science and research buildings of the future (2.15pm) and harnessing digitally enabled construction and MEP to drive sustainable development (1pm) - all led by experts from across the Wates Group who will be joined by leading industry peers. We look forward to welcoming you with a hot coffee, a comfortable chair (and shelter from the rain!) along with fresh insights at the UKREiiF conference again today. https://lnkd.in/eHJhsuHQ

Following numerous requests to extend the submission deadline, the organisers of the Tall Buildings Awards have responded and moved the entry deadline to 28 March 2024. There is just one caveat, construction professionals operating in the tall buildings arena or their marketing teams, need to notify the organisers via email of an intent to enter. If you are in London, what is the likelihood that the building you are in is a repurposed building? Such an extremely relevant topic, we will explore the challenges of sustainability in building repurposing, while also emphasising the crucial role of fire safety. We are bringing together architects, fire engineers, structural engineers and insurers. Fire safety is not just about meeting regulations, especially when repurposing existing buildings, where each project presents unique challenges. How do we address situations that have never been faced before? One of the keys lies in understanding the problems—but how can we ensure the collaboration between these four fields? See you tomorrow for the discussion (and drinks after) on 18 Sep 2024 at 18:00 in LT1 Cruciform Building, Gower Street! Would be easy to spot, interestingly, this iconic red brick building was also repurposed—once a hospital for most of the 1900s, now is one of the major teaching facilities at UCL. Please get in touch if you do want to come but can't secure your ticket!
The SFPE UK Chapter are delighted to announce the upcoming in-person CPD event in London: ‘Building repurposing and sustainability: perspectives from architects, structural and fire engineers, and insurers.’ Speakers: Jose Torero (UCL) / Andrew Lawrence (Arup) / Yasmin Al-Ani Spence (WilkinsonEyre) / Dominic Lion ACII (Gallagher) Date: Wednesday, 18 September 2024 Time: 6-8pm Location: University College London, Lecture Theatre 1, Cruciform Building, Gower Street, London Event description: This event will address the technical challenges posed by architectural, structural integrity, fire safety, and insurance considerations for building repurposing and sustainability. Each speaker will offer insights from their respective fields, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in achieving sustainable outcomes. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in building repurposing and how integrating different professional perspectives can lead to more resilient, safe, and sustainable environments. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion and a Q&A session. The event is free to attend, and tickets are limited. To register, please use the following link: https://lnkd.in/ex-qArBu The event will be followed by a networking event which is kindly sponsored by Affinity (UK & Ireland)!
