One of the simplest and most impactful steps you can take is to let your grass and wildflowers grow a bit longer. By cutting or scything it just a few times a year, you'll provide birds and insects with flowers and seedheads that change throughout the seasons. This variety is essential for wildlife to thrive. Many large-scale rewilding projects introduce grazers, such as wild ponies and bison, on a rotational basis to enhance landscape diversity and attract different species. By varying your mowing patterns, you can mimic a natural grazing process and boost biodiversity in your backyard. If a complete rewilding transformation feels too daunting, start small. When observing a birdhouse placed high in a tree, several thoughts and questions naturally come to mind. 1. Does placing a birdhouse on a tree affect natural nesting behaviors? 2. Could birdhouses reduce birds' instincts to build their nests? 3. Are birdhouses a genuine conservation effort or just a superficial fix for habitat destruction? 4. Do birdhouses help balance urban wildlife, or create dependencies? 5. Is the birdhouse more for aesthetics or genuinely beneficial for birds?

The threatened #gophertortoise is an important keystone species in the southern United States that is facing immense pressure from urban development and habitat degradation. #Longleaf pine forests are imperative for the gopher tortoise’s survival. We are lucky to have a few species of willows which are native to this part of Scotland. Most willows love water, which is why they thrive so effectively in the river and riparian environment. Willows are great for biodiversity – not only will they help create shade to stabilise water temperatures where planted along rivers, but they give food and shelter to our native wildlife, attracting moth caterpillars, bees, butterflies and other insects. They tend to grow prolifically and can help to slow down soil erosion. Roots are remarkable for their toughness and size. Willows are therefore a useful tool in river restoration, where live willow stakes and willow ‘spiling’ (a traditional technique of weaving branches along the bankside) can be used to provide protection and support to eroding banks. You’ll see plenty of willows along the River Dee and tributaries, older well-established trees alongside some of our new riverbank planting projects. #riverdee #habitatrestoration #willow #nativetrees #onemilliontrees
