11 years ago, on this weekend, I went with my two Atlanta roommates to Monster Jam. Not a care in the world — days before I started my new job. (Look how young and carefree we were, Sai and Robert!) My work goals back then? Show up on time and hit/exceed metrics. Unofficial goals? Start the company’s first softball team (co-credit to Robert Jones), win Halloween and summer contests, make new friends, and earn a decent paycheck. All that to say… Leaders: Don’t expect new hires to look or act like you. They aren’t going to have your same convictions and passion on day one. If they have the raw material you’re looking for, develop it. Invest in them. Show them the way instead of just telling them. They may surprise you! New hires: Don’t compare your first chapter to someone else’s book series. Just do your best — every day. Someone will notice. And if they don’t? Well, VocoVision is hiring! 😉 #workanniversary

We’ve hired 25 people over the course of our journey so far. After many successes and a few misses, this is the hiring philosophy that helped us build an all-star team: → We don’t hire for the sake of filling positions May seem obvious, but I’ve seen countless startups hire just because they can. → Hire people who complement you For example: if you're more system-driven, look for people who are more execution-driven. → Hire slow & fire fast We’ve had this happen on two occasions when things didn't seem to be working out, and we parted ways fast. → We prioritize friends and former colleagues of our team members For example: our engineer, Sally, recommended Ethan. They’ve worked together at previous jobs, and because we knew Sally was highly skilled and a stellar team player, we were confident in Ethan as well. No hiring system is perfect but it's safe to say this one is working pretty well for us.

This week we’re winding down at Knit For Lewis and I it will be a chance to spend our Christmas’ with our families and a time to switch off from running a business. We’ll both be navigating this as new parents so I’m gearing up for the madness. I’ve got some planning and reflections to do this week, and I’m looking forward to preparing for some big projects next year. The learning I'm taking from the year: - Be present. Hi friends! With the announcement of my new career services business, Kylie Michele Careers I wanted to talk about my vision, the inspiration behind the company and what it can do for you! For years I have negotiated with and built teams for some of the world’s top product and design leaders across companies like Airbnb, Reddit, Inc., Atlassian and Ironclad. For a while, being able to bring in women, Black, brown and disabled folks gave me my purpose. It showed me that I could have an amazing career while also bringing some good to the world. But at the end of the day, recruiters are on the company’s team - not yours. Now, the best recruiters are absolutely on your team, but we are pressured by recruiting leadership to churn and work at a pace that’s untenable. When I got laid off from Reddit after doing some of the best work of my life rebuilding their entire UX recruiting organization, it killed me. I had incredibly strong performance, I had made a huge difference to the company and I was working with really talented people. But that’s the nature of capitalism and recruiting. The thought of going back into recruiting during this nightmare market, where recruiters are either out of work or worked to the bone, sounded awful. I’m tired. I’ve done 5 years straight of hyper growth and the pace was killing me. So I decided to get out of the tech rat race. I decided to take a bet on myself, and use my knowledge and expertise and almost decade of experience recruiting to bring that knowledge to you. With companies making record profits and using the excuse of “it’s just business” when they are laying you off, taking away your source of income, livelihood - well then, in my opinion, it’s just business to enable workers as much as we possibly can. My programs and 1:1 strategic sessions are focused on that - giving the power back to you. Enabling you to take as much money from corporations to make sure you thrive. They are certainly doing that for themselves, why not you? Let’s rewrite the narrative. If tech is backed up by full HR teams, lawyers, finance teams, etc., why wouldn’t you deserve to be fully enabled too? I promise you, having a recruiter that knows the ins and outs of finance teams, hiring mangers, interview processes, will absolutely ensure you get a higher income, better titles and a full optimized career.
