ACER has found a correlation between low library use/borrowing and poor reading performance... no surprises there. The unasked question in this article though, is if the libraries the students have access to are staffed with qualified library staff, or are just rooms with books and an aide to scan them in and out. Qualified library staff are better able to match the right book to the right student at the right time, and get them hooked on reading. https://lnkd.in/eWPbFEUR

Ex-classroom teacher, currently VP of Growth for Hoot Reading. On a mission to change children's lives through literacy.
$1B was spent on literacy. Reading scores are lower today than they were 14 years ago. How is that possible? Turns out the majority of those monies were used for non-researched-based literacy programs. Schools and teachers were free to choose whatever literacy program they fancied, regardless of their effectiveness. Structured Literacy is the only way to teach reading. Spend a fraction of $1B on 1:1 Structured Literacy tutoring and you'll get dramatic results. Have you noticed a decrease in students’ reading habits? 📖 According to The Guardian, recent studies have shown a “4.4% decrease in the number of books read by pupils, and a “sharp drop” in the difficulty of those read by older secondary students.” Is this a temporary, residual effect of the pandemic, or is this a sign that we should be devoting resources to encourage students to read more?
