🌍 Happy Earth Day! Today is a great day to highlight the vital connection between conservation and philanthropy. As the Old Dominion University Office of Advancement, we view environmental stewardship as a key form of giving back—a philanthropic act that benefits not only our planet but every individual it sustains. 🌿 Conservation efforts, from energy-saving initiatives to recycling programs, are philanthropic investments in the health and longevity of our environment. They reflect our commitment to responsible stewardship and the well-being of future generations. As professionals and leaders, it is imperative to recognize that sustainable practices in our daily operations and academic endeavors are not just good policy—they are acts of generosity toward the world we all share. Let’s continue to embrace this broader definition of philanthropy, where every action to conserve is an act of giving. 🦁💙

Our Research and Innovation Grants are dedicated to projects benefiting Scotland’s native woodlands or enhancing understanding of their value. SCOTLAND: The Big Picture's Painting Scotland Yellow Project does just that. In their next phase, they’re creating a film to dispel myths and will be hosting a specialist event for the tree-growing industry, aiming to: 🌳 Reverse the decline of Aspen, a vital component of Scotland’s native woodlands. 🌳 Foster collaboration between growers and aspen experts to address production challenges. 🌳 Raise awareness of aspen’s importance, promoting natural regeneration of existing strands. We’re proud to co-fund this important next step in their project. Emma Razi - Head of Fundraising, SBP, said: "We are extremely grateful to Future Woodlands Scotland. At the Golden Bottle Trust (GBT), the Hoare family uses a philanthropic profiling tool called Care4Most (www.care4most.org) to establish which causes mean the most to family members. Recently, the GBT’s focus on environmental projects intensified, with the funding target rising from 11% in 2018 to 20% in 2022. To maximise its impact, the GBT partnered with Impatience Earth to develop an 'ecosystem granting' strategy. This approach uses multiple smaller grants to address the interconnected nature of environmental issues, supporting solutions from the planting and preservation of seagrass to regenerative agriculture. It’s a big day at Aviva Canada as we, in partnership with WWF-Canada, proudly launch the Business and Biodiversity Action Plan. 🌳📘 Our economy is dependent on nature, with at least half of the world’s wealth being moderately or highly dependent on thriving ecosystems. Yet the rapid decline of wildlife populations by 69% in the last 50 years is a stark reminder of the urgent need for action. Every Canadian business, across all industries, plays a pivotal role in this mission. 🌍 Join us in celebrating World Environment Day! 🌿    Today is #WorldEnvironmentDay, a global initiative by the United Nations to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues.     For the last two years, we have sponsored the Seawilding Project to restore marine habitats, and we are very pleased to share that we are continuing for a third year in 2024. This year, we are donating an amount for each of our current employees, with a larger amount pledged for each new starter since World Environment Day 2023. Our donation will support the Seawilding Project’s goal of planting between 500 -1,000m2 of seagrass rhizome shoots into the restoration areas this year. It will also contribute to the planting of around 100,000 seagrass seeds this autumn using various methodologies including direct injection and hand scattering onto the seabed as part of key scientific trials.     Seagrass can capture carbon 35 times faster than tropical rainforests and offers a natural solution to the climate crisis. Forest Investments: A Win-Win I'd like to spotlight a trend that's gaining traction: utility investment in forest restoration. It's a venture where profitability meets sustainability, making it a compelling choice for forward-thinking portfolios. Why forests? For one, healthy woodlands are crucial in our fight against climate change. They sequester carbon, preserve biodiversity, and are vital for water regulation. Utilities investing in forests isn't just about corporate responsibility; it's a strategic move to protect infrastructure against the increasing risks of wildfires and storms, events exacerbated by a warming climate. In the UK, organisations like National Grid have begun exploring how they can contribute to forest conservation. It's not just about planting trees; it's about restoring ecosystems. Proper forest management can prevent costly damages to power lines and other infrastructure, an aspect that highlights the interplay between natural resources and energy reliability. Moreover, such investments resonate with consumers who are more environmentally conscious than ever before. A utility company that takes an active role in environmental stewardship is likely to see positive responses from the public and shareholders alike. A partnership led by the government of Mongolia and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has raised $198 million in commitments towards conservation and sustainable communities, with similar initiatives in up to 20 other countries in the pipeline. Eternal Mongolia aims to create 14 mln hectares of new protected areas in the country’s grasslands, forests, deserts, wetlands, and rivers through a Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) initiative that includes $71 mln from private and philanthropic donors. It will strengthen the management of the country’s existing National Protected Areas, covering 47 mln ha, and benefit at least 24,000 households in community-managed practices like sustainable grazing across a further 34 mln ha. “The scale of impact this Eternal Mongolia initiative has is, frankly, quite transformative. It will be the largest land and freshwater conservation initiative that TNC has ever been engaged in across our 75-year history,” Ryan Demmy Bidwell, global director of PFP at TNC, told our reporter Thomas Cox. 🌱 Corporate Social Responsibility in Action: Vistra and Serve the City Partnership. Once again, we joined forces with VISTRA for a community cleanup event that demonstrated the power of collaborative effort in corporate social responsibility. It was a day not only of environmental action but also of team building and community engagement. 👫 Volunteer Engagement: We were thrilled to see diverse groups of volunteers, including families, come together. The event included a fun-filled afternoon with activities like football, making it a truly family-friendly day. 🚯 Environmental Impact: The results speak for themselves - together, we collected 52.9 kg of trash, including almost 3,000 cigarette butts. With diligent sorting, over 75% of this waste will now be recycled, reducing the need for new resources and underscoring our commitment to sustainability. 🌿 Restoration Success: The cleanup not only beautified the local area of Kockelscheur but also restored it to its pristine condition, showcasing what we can achieve when we work together for a common cause. A huge thank you to all the volunteers and organizers. Your dedication to making a difference is inspiring and deeply valued.
