There are two weeks left to participate in the 2024 Open Enrollment event! This week, hear from OSAC Registry Implementers about the benefits they’ve experienced from implementing standards on the OSAC Registry. First up is Jeremy Triplett, Director of the Kentucky State Police (KSP) Central Forensic Laboratory. Jeremy was the first Chair of OSAC’s Forensic Science Standards Board, and in 2019, one of the first two forensic science service providers to receive an OSAC Registry Standards Implementer Certificate. Jeremy has been a staunch advocate of implementing standards and mentoring other forensic scientists on the merits of the implementation process. Hear what he has to say about the virtues of implementing standards: https://lnkd.in/gKYW3ZBg If you would like to share your implementation status with OSAC, participate in the 2024 Open Enrollment event: https://lnkd.in/daKeAGeC #ForensicOSAC #ForensicScience #Forensics #Standards

It has come to my attention that the Organization of Scientific Area Committees for Forensic Science Forensic Science Standards Board will vote on whether “OSAC 2022-S-0024, Best Practice Recommendations for Evaluative Forensic DNA Testimony” will be added to the registry today. This document allows for evaluation of findings given proposed activity to be performed ad-hoc on the witness stand and ‘notional’ non- numerical assignment of likelihood ratios. These two points diverge from the framework based on balance and transparency. This is a death knell for forensic DNA in the US, a system that has placed DNA on a high pedestal BECAUSE of its use of numerical weights and applied statistics. This a big step back toward subjective language which often overstates the value of results. It subverts our forensic DNA quality process and legal discovery laws. It cannot pass this vote and become accepted practice in the United States. I urge anyone with the power to vote against this document to do so today. #forensicdna #forensicscience

Good morning I am considerably happy to share that most recently an article titled "Spreading Wings of Forensic Science " jointly contributed by me and Aditi have been published by SCC Journal. The link is attached below to download the article free of cost. This article proposes to spread wings of Forensic Science beyond courtroom proceedings since this Blend Science of various disciplines helps to establish probity and integrity of a procedure or a fact to reach out to truth. Forensics is an approach to build reasonableness and logic in argumentation and critical thinking. This classy merit of forensics may be used in either courtroom (existing scenario) as well as in industrial and other areas (proposed scenario). This new approach will also provide wider employment avenues for budding Forensic experts across globe. We have coined several new terms like "Community Forensics", "Forensic Aid", "Media Forensics", "Environmental and Sustainability Forensics" and many more. Community Forensics aimed to speard awareness about applications of forensic knowledge for a common man. Forensic Aid is proposed to be an integral part of the right to Legal Aid which has been globally declared as an essential ingradient of the right to life. This article, we hope and wish, will ignite further thinking for research to exploit the applications of Forensic Science for greater good to the hoi polloi and the society at large. Happy reading. Cheers!!! https://lnkd.in/dm-Smfge

The ASCLD Forensic Research Committee (FRC) is proud to announce a new submission to the Validation and Evaluation Repository. As you may already know, the purpose of this FRC initiative is to create a central repository of forensic validations and evaluations. ASCLD hopes that this repository will foster information sharing and promote collaboration with the forensic science community. The Kansas City Police Crime Laboratory has submitted a new validation report highlighting a Bullet Cleaning Solution Validation Study aimed to improve the procedure for cleaning bullets and bullet fragments that have been exposed to blood. For more information about this validation or other validations or evaluations within the repository please check out https://lnkd.in/eG7kpuS Please consider submitting information about your lab’s validations or evaluations to the repository. Information could include basic information such as validation/evaluation title, lab name, and point of contact information (which enables other forensic scientists to contact you with questions) or additional information such as a short validation or evaluation summary or even a full validation or evaluation report. By sharing this information, you are supporting other laboratories that wish to expand their forensic capabilities! #firearms #kansascity #research #collaboration

What a fascinating presentation by Dr Jodie Ward today at IAFS - International Association of Forensic Sciences! I’ve had a budding interest in #DVI and have been following others conducting taphonomic research. But I wasn’t aware that Australia had a taphonomic facility. This was such an informative presentation on the development of methods for response to uniquely challenging DVI scenarios. Maximizing donor resources through thoughtful scenario design was impressive. This is also the first time I’ve heard of e-nose technology for the detection of volatile compounds from decomposition Wow! #taphonomy #forensicscience #humanidentification #disasterrecovery #disasterpreparedness #iafs2023

A thought-provoking interview between Jo Millington and The Netherlands Register of Court Experts (NRGD) Headline: Invest in BPA training to help crime scene practitioners optimise bloodstain evidence, implement an effective DNA sampling strategy and take records that allow a meaningful assessment of bloodstains later down the track when the crime scene is no longer available. #bloodstainpatternanalysis #BPA #forensicscience #crimescene #CSI #qualitystandards #CPD #casereview #DNA #expertwitness
“I'm so passionate about forensic science and BPA, I can't even tell you. My journey started in the 1980s, watching television! In the 1980s there was a programme called Indelible Evidence. I watched that program when I was a kid and I wanted to become a forensic scientist from that point onward.” This quote is from the NRGD interview with Jo Millington, director of SPATTER/ED, who helped set up the NRGD Standards for Bloodstain Pattern Analysis (BPA). For more than 30 years, Jo Millington (MSc Forensic Science, PGCert Teaching & Learning and a BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences and MIABPA) has been a staunch advocate for the application of BPA in the UK and abroad. Once adopted, the Standards will be used for the assessment and registration of bloodstain pattern analysts. Read the entire interview (also available in Dutch) with Jo: https://lnkd.in/dJdbzYtr

NIST just announced the release of the Forensic Science Environmental Scan 2023, the result of "an intensive 18-month, multi-pronged effort by the NIST Forensic Science team to assess the strategic opportunities for forensic science research and standards that are needed to drive significant advancements in the practice of forensic science over the coming decade. " "This environmental scan provides a broad view of the forensic science environment (as of 2023) and characterizes high-level historical and current issues and trends that might impact near and long-term decisions by forensic science research and standards programs, including the NIST Forensic Science Program. A historical perspective is provided followed by a more detailed summary of various issues relating to the state of forensic science across five different landscapes: governance, economic, societal, scientific and technological, and legal and regulatory. Each landscape includes a discussion of several issues that are potentially relevant to the administration of forensic science research and standards programs in the United States. The relevance of each issue, and manner in which it might impact those programs, are discussed under the heading "Considerations for Forensic Science Research and Standards Programs" within each subsection and outline potential approaches and priorities that those programs might consider as part of their longer-term strategy moving forward." https://lnkd.in/efUhb4rY #StrategicoOpportunities #ForensicScience #Research #Standards #Practice

As you may already know, the purpose of this FRC initiative is to create a central repository of forensic validations and evaluations. ASCLD hopes that this repository will foster information sharing and promote collaboration with the forensic science community. Virginia Department of Forensic Science has submitted a new validation report entitled “A foundational study of #fire debris interpretation using quantitative measures of #chromatographic features in #gasoline and the use of graphical display to demonstrate data sufficiency”. The methodologies introduced are a step toward a documentation process that ensures greater transparency in fire debris examinations and comparisons. The methods generate a quantitative sufficiency graph for consistent data interpretation and documentation.
