Strengthening the nation's use of forensic science through improved standards.
About us
Administered by NIST, OSAC is a collective body of more than 550+ forensic science practitioners and other experts representing all levels of the government, academia, and industry. Together, these members have expertise in a broad array of forensic science disciplines as well as scientific research, measurement science, statistics, law, and policy. OSAC is working to strengthen forensic practice through improved standards. To do this we: facilitate the development of technically sound, science-based standards through a formal standard developing organization (SDO) process; evaluate existing standards published by SDOs for placement on the OSAC Registry; promote the use of the OSAC Registry approved standards throughout the forensic science community; and establish and maintain working relationships with other similar organizations.

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) published a report outlining strategic opportunities to advance forensic science in the U.S. through research and standards. Check it out! #ForensicScience #Forensics #Standards
The four grand challenges in forensic science: A new report from NIST identifies strategies for advancing forensic science through research and standards. The forensic science community has a significant opportunity to strengthen the validity, reliability, and consistency of existing methods and techniques for the analysis of forensic evidence. The four grand strategies focus on: ▪️ accuracy and reliability of complex methods and techniques for analysis of forensic evidence ▪️ new methods and techniques for analysis of forensic evidence ▪️ science-based standards and guidelines for forensic science practices ▪️ adoption and use of advanced forensic analysis methods, techniques, standards and guidelines Learn more about the challenges: https://lnkd.in/gEe5AHr3 #ForensicScience #Research #Standards

Check out the September OSAC Standards Bulletin! We've added nine standards to the Registry this month in the areas of forensic anthropology, fire debris, trace materials, gunshot residue and digital evidence. Provide your feedback by September 30 on one SDO published and four OSAC Proposed Standards that are being considered for the Registry and on 23 other forensic science standards that are currently open for comment at the Academy Standards Board (ASB), ASTM International and the Scientific Working Group on Digital Evidence (SWGDE). View the two new published ASTM standards in trace materials and fire debris and the new NFPA published standard for fire investigation units. Also, a big THANK YOU to all those who participated in the 2024 OSAC Registry Implementation Open Enrollment event! Check out some preliminary data in the September Standards Bulletin and learn how you can submit your implementation information throughout the year: https://lnkd.in/gGqmu5sF #ForensicOSAC #ForensicScience #Forensics #Standards

OSAC is excited to be part of the International Conference on Forensic Nursing Science & Practice held in Denver, Colorado from August 27-29, 2024. Today, Joyce Williams (OSAC Forensic Nursing Subcommittee Chair), Nancy Downing (OSAC Forensic Nursing Subcommittee Vice Chair), Marnie Shiels (U.S. Department of Justice, The Office on Violence Against Women ), Jennifer Pierce-Weeks (International Association of Forensic Nurses), and JP Jones (OSAC Program Manager) participated in a 1.5 hour panel discussion titled “Why Standards in Forensic Nursing?". It was a great dialogue with the attendees on the value and importance of standards. We thank IAFN for including this important topic in their conference! Our second OSAC Registry Implementer testimonial is from Eva M.L. King, Quality Assurance Director of the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratories (WSCL). All three laboratories of the WSCL in Milwaukee, Madison, and Wausau, have received OSAC Registry Standards Implementer Certificates! Eva has been a staunch advocate of standards implementation and an outstanding mentor to other forensic scientists interested in this effort. She has submitted nine updates of the WSCL standards implementation status to the OSAC Program Office and plans to participate in the 2024 Open Enrollment event. Check out what Eva has to say about the virtues of implementing standards: https://lnkd.in/eGQb6cC2 Participate in Open Enrollment by September 2 and join the 170+ implementers who are helping to improve forensic science through standards: https://lnkd.in/daKeAGeC #ForensicOSAC #ForensicScience #Forensics #Standards

There are two weeks left to participate in the 2024 Open Enrollment event! This week, hear from OSAC Registry Implementers about the benefits they’ve experienced from implementing standards on the OSAC Registry. First up is Jeremy Triplett, Director of the Kentucky State Police (KSP) Central Forensic Laboratory. Jeremy was the first Chair of OSAC’s Forensic Science Standards Board, and in 2019, one of the first two forensic science service providers to receive an OSAC Registry Standards Implementer Certificate. Jeremy has been a staunch advocate of implementing standards and mentoring other forensic scientists on the merits of the implementation process. Hear what he has to say about the virtues of implementing standards: https://lnkd.in/gKYW3ZBg If you would like to share your implementation status with OSAC, participate in the 2024 Open Enrollment event: https://lnkd.in/daKeAGeC #ForensicOSAC #ForensicScience #Forensics #Standards

There's an app (and videos) for that! This week at the IAI Conference our colleagues at RTI International shared info about the Trace Evidence Collection app and videos that are available to assist investigators with the recognition, collection, and preservation of trace evidence. The app and videos were developed to accompany the Trace Materials Crime Scene Investigation Guide developed by OSAC's Trace Materials Subcommittee.
