🎉 Just posted! East and Southern Africa Sr Associate for New Business. New business at Chemonics looks out several years at upcoming proposal opportunities,* organizes capture phase** research, finds people to staff the proposal teams, works in proposal roles, and (once experienced) mentors proposal team members. This is a great opportunity for #transitioningveterans in the 📍 #WashingtonDC area (#hybrid). #Veterans, if you're like me and keep a mental rolodex of colleagues' goals and interests to connect them with meaningful opportunities, working in new business will give you the opportunity to build those compatible ad hoc teams with appropriate mixes of experience and learning. Like being the senior watch officer on a ship, you are assigning under-instruction writers and cost preparers increasingly complex roles on increasingly complex projects, working around leave and competing assignments, and finding coverage when expected timelines change and conflicts are unavoidable. Like a HUMINTer, you are persuading senior people to dedicate a full day of their schedule to reviewing a proposal. Like a creative E-4 in touch with the other ships on the waterfront through the barracks network, you can get info from our existing project offices in-country and figure out how to share a resource. Also, Sophie Pauken loves working in ESAF! * USAID provides a business forecast: https://lnkd.in/eFBQsnwc ** Capture phase is everything before the solicitation (RFP, RFTOP, NOFO, IDIQ, etc.) is released #vetsindevelopment #chemonicscareers #developmentworkshere #internationaldevelopment https://lnkd.in/ec7vcyMP

Research Assistant @ Carnegie Mellon University Africa | Financial Literacy, Fintech Solutions| Certified Social and Behavior Researcher
If you want to apply, go ahead! but I will tell you an inspiring story. Around 4 years ago (2020), nature did bring me to the same table with Jeremy Golan, we discussed a countless number of things, including One Acre Fund. At that time, the organization was serving only 1million farmers (their website), it also showed that they were expecting to serve 10 million farmers by 2030 (to me, it was insane idea). I asked him, "You have been operating for 15 years, and you are serving 1 million farmers (I don't want to say clients), and in just 10 years you want to serve 9 million farmers, how is it possible?. Because he is from an economic background, he explained things to me, and I also explained the mathematics that was in my head (I was thinking about exponential model). See this today, just 4 years, the number is multiplied by 4. Let us say that the Lorenz system might exist in social enterprise (joking). Thinking about this, I just remembered the day Prof. Patrick McSharry introduced linear modeling in class. In the absence of data, the model might say, that at the end of the month I will have 30 wives, given that I was single yesterday and now I am married. Data is also needed, we need to use it appropriately and put in the work to achieve projections like the one for One Acre Fund. I spent my precious time at the organization, witnessed its spirit, and was impressed. It was a short time but it is worth a master's degree, They won't stop teaching you. Shout out to my teacher, Mussie Habte for the journey. If I might not have a chance to return to the organization, I will always use the McKinsey way of solving business problems (and everyone I introduced that to enjoyed that). Key takeaways: 1. Use data to make projections. 2. Plan your path 3. Invest in the mission 4. Surround yourself with like-minded people 5. Believe in your goals and keep moving 6. Keep evaluating and iterating if necessary #keeplearning Jesse Thornburg
Hello! One Acre Fund, a social enterprise that serves over 4 millions of smallholder farmers across Africa, is hiring for 2 senior positions in the Learning and Development (L&D) Department: (1) Global Learning and Development Lead: Are you a visionary leader who is comfortable with data and can use data to inform strategy? Are you also a great project and stakeholder manager? The role will focus on using performance data to inform the org's training and upskilling strategies! Does this speak to you? You may be a good fit even without prior L&D experience. What is non-negotiable is someone’s ability to think strategically and be able to drive towards implementation and results. (2) Manager Training and Support Lead: Are you an excellent program manager who also has a passion for capacity building? This position may be for you – this person will lead the L&D team’s portfolio of work geared towards developing managers throughout the organization (more than 1600 managers and growing!). Prior L&D experience is not required. We are interested in a great project manager with demonstrated ability to turn "challenges or problems" into actionable projects, ability to create a roadmap to delivering optimally efficient solutions designed to solve said challenges and ability to turn a bold vision into relevant tactics, and produce results.
