#Scottish Ministers have approved a variation application to refine the Pentland Floating Offshore Wind Farm's offshore consents. The variation includes a reduction in the number of turbines, which will be deployed within a smaller area while maintaining 100 MW capacity. Pentland Floating Offshore Wind Farm is being developed by HIGHLAND WIND LIMITED which is majority-owned by a fund managed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) with Hexicon AB as a minority shareholder. Project development activities are being led by CIP's development partner, Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP). The variation application was submitted after further survey work and advancements in project design allowed the proposals to be refined. This is not the first time that the number of turbines has been reduced for the floating offshore wind project. In July 2022, the Pentland Floating Offshore Wind consortium decided to reduce the area of the floating wind farm site by half and the number of turbines being installed from ten to seven. Located 7.5 kilometres off the coast of Dounreay in Caithness, the wind farm will feature Stiesdal Offshore's TetraSub floating foundation technology. Once completed, the project will be capable of providing renewable energy to approximately 70,000 homes, equivalent to around 65 per cent of homes in the Highland Local Council Area (based on 2020 figures). #wind #engineering #renewableenergy #carbon60 #offshorewind #energy

The US State of Maine and the Federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) have agreed on a floating offshore wind research lease in the Gulf of Maine, which could allow for the deployment of twelve floating wind turbines capable of generating 144 MW. 30 miles southeast of Portland, this will be the country’s first floating offshore wind research array, and will let the state, the fishing community, wildlife experts, the offshore wind industry, and others conduct in-depth studies and evaluate floating offshore wind as a renewable energy source. The research will also evaluate the compatibility with existing ocean uses and assess its potential effects on the environment, supply chains, and job creation. A consortium between Elicio and BayWa r.e. EMEA has won the AO5 tender in France to develop and operate the country’s first floating offshore wind farm, the 250 MW Pennavel project, off the south coast of Brittany. The offer proposed by the consortium amounted to EUR 86.45 per MWh and was selected following the examination of all projects by the Commission for Regulation of Energy (CRE). Offshore wind industry is staying above water with floating wind technology 💡🌊 This month France announced the winners of the 250 MW South Brittany floating offshore wind auction, the world’s first commercial scale floating offshore wind auction. This is a major milestone for floating offshore wind technology. 👏🏼 Floating offshore wind is key to unlocking offshore sites with water depths of 60 m and more in these areas floating offshore wind turbines are more cost competitive than traditional bottom fixed turbines. Floating offshore wind holds the key to offshore wind development in large parts of the Atlantic, the Celtic Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Norwegian Sea, and other sea basins with higher water depths. 💧 💡 The auction is a major milestone. The installation of transition pieces (TPs) is about to commence at Vineyard Wind 1, America's first large-scale offshore wind farm. Beginning next month, DEME Group's jack-up vessel Sea Challenger will begin placing TPs at 17 monopile locations in lease area OCS-A 0501. The campaign will continue through June 2024. The units are being manufactured by Spain's Windar Renovables, which won the contract in 2019. The first of 62 transition pieces arrived at the Port of Avilés in December 2022. DEME Group Offshore US is responsible for the transportation and installation of the units. In addition to TPs, DEME Group's wind farm installation vessel Sea Installer has installed ten wind turbines so far at the offshore construction site located about 15 miles (approximately 24 kilometres) off the coast of Massachusetts. The first GE Renewable Energy's Haliade-X 13 MW wind turbine was installed at the site in October 2023 and the offshore wind farm produced its first power in January 2024. A month later, five of the planned 62 units were delivering energy to the New England grid, generating 68 MW of clean energy, enough to power 30,000 homes in Massachusetts, according to the developers of the project, Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). Once completed the project will generate 800 MW, enough to power more than 400,000 homes and businesses across the Commonwealth, while reducing carbon emissions by over 1.6 million tonnes per year. #renewableenergy #wind #engineering #usa #carbon60 #energy #offshorewind #america
