Yesterday, I had the honour of standing as the voice of the Canadian Truck Operators Association at the vibrant Truck World Show held at The International Convention Centre in Mississauga. The event was a hub of inspiration as industry leaders showcased their dedication and innovation, and I couldn't help but swell with pride as I witnessed the extraordinary contributions of the South Asian community in shaping the North American supply chain.
Among the highlights were the best practices exemplified by JB Rand Express and SPS Logistics. These companies are not only driving efficiency in logistics but also investing heavily in their most valuable asset – their employees. It was inspiring to learn about their commitment to continuous upskilling through soft skills and leadership training initiatives.
In particular, I was struck by the visionary leadership of Ms. Paramjit Kajla and Mr. Bob Randhawa. Their shared vision to elevate human capital within the industry is not just admirable but essential for sustainable growth. Collaborating with such forward-thinkers to work together to foster a culture of learning and innovation, is an honor.
Together, we're not just shaping the future of logistics; we're investing in the development and empowerment of our workforce. Here's to continued collaboration and the pursuit of excellence in employee engagement and enrichment!

There's a great video I always enjoy watching and sharing with clients by David Marquet, author of 'Turn The Ship Around'.
Many of you will likely have heard his famous speech where he talks about how he was unexpectedly made Captain of the attack submarine U.S.S Santa Fe which, at the time, was ranked dead-last in retention and operational standing in the US fleet.
In his speech he shares his experience of trying to lead on a different vessel that he knew very little about and how, from the experience, he came to realise a very different way of leadership!
Shifting from the traditional 'Take Control & Give Orders' style of leadership that he had learned throughout his career, Captain Marquet adopted a leadership approach of 'Giving Control', by leveraging the principles of 'Operational Competence' and 'Clarity of Intent', resulting in the USS Santa Fe receiving the highest inspection rating ever seen by the inspection teams.
These are some of the vital fundamentals that drive an Operational Excellence system.
If your direction and priorities are crystal clear and regularly communicated up and down and throughout your organisation, then the employees with the right competencies, will know the right things to do at the right time, in order to drive the right outcomes for your business.
Operational Excellence has many powerful tools to drive such change, such as Clear Line of Sight, Policy Deployment and others, which make providing that 'clarity of intent' simple.

Leadership in Action
Last week I was invited to an intimate dinner in Atlanta with Ed Bastian who also did a fireside chat discussing his nearly twenty years of leadership at Delta Air Lines.
I have long admired Ed's leadership from a distance, but to hear about the intentionality with which he rallies his company's culture, mobilizes Delta's 90,000-person workforce, as well as his laser-focus on customer service, it is no wonder why the company has long remained America's most admired airline, why he's long remained one of my most admired leaders or the company, one of my favorite brands.
A few talking points from Ed may help illuminate why these statements are true:
- It is important to treat employees, like you would want them to treat the customers
- Ed spends a significant amount of time in the field with employees and has chosen not to serve on another company's board of directors, in order to solely focus on Delta Airlines
- Delta employees have experienced an 85% pay increase, on average, over the last 15years
- 30% of the employees are new to the company in past four years, so consistency of messages and cultural norms are critical
- During the pandemic, employees were willing to go without pay to avoid a furlough
- The company's profit-sharing plan paid out $13B to employees in 2023
A master class in leadership!
Thank you, J.P. Morgan Advisory Services team for curating such a special evening. Always great to catch up with classmate Anu Aiyengar. And Rebecca Thornton and Jessica McIntosh, your leadership and support is PRICELESS.

Many of my CEO and Board Director friends know my passion and my playbook for creating good jobs that can gain a competitive long-term advantage. My conversation with Delta Air Lines Board Director, Chris Hazleton was enlightening and touched my heart, as my Dad was the leader of the Majdoor Union at Indian Railways.
Chris, with his profound experience at Air Line Pilots Association and as the Chairman of the Delta MEC Strategic Planning Committee, showcases how vital metrics and management language are important in steering boardroom discussions toward actionable strategies. 📊
His approach goes beyond mere numbers; it is about instilling a systems-thinking mindset that champions both safety and the value offered to employees. This is how you create a legacy of good jobs, which directly translates to competitive longevity. ✨
To all my fellow CEOs and Board Directors, let's continue to raise the bar in improving front-line jobs with operational excellence which can lead to higher productivity and increased competitiveness.

The Conference Board
A very good article highlighting the need for clear and accurate communication, as well as some leadership lessons.
If everything is urgent, then people will start ignoring your requests, and prioritise based on their own judgement.
Similarly if you are calling every situation as an emergency, then complacency may set in, and they may not be prepared when there is truly an emergency situation.
What are your thoughts?
