Hi, although I’ve been here on LI for some time, I’ve taken a little more of a break, which we all need from time to time! I’d like to take this opportunity to re-introduce myself. I’m Dr. Nancy Yen Shipley, also known as NancyMD and my journey has been anything but traditional. I was a little girl growing up in SoCal in the 80s, watching Connie Chung on TV and I dreamed of one day being just like her. Only problem was I had a phobia of public speaking! At UCLA, I started as a premed, but not for the right reasons. I ended up a psych major and had not-the-best GPA. But many years later I decided for myself that I wanted to go into medicine. I entered medical school at almost 30, a non-traditional student. I had no idea what orthopedics was, but after a random turn of events, I discovered my future specialty. There were many naysayers, specifically telling me that orthopedics was not a good field for women or at least for women that wanted to “find a husband and have children”. Despite a barrage of vocal deterrents, I persevered and entered orthopedic residency. Now I am 13 years into being a partner in my private practice and I love what I do. Crazy…a few years ago I even conceptualized, produced and hosted my own podcast, The 6% with NancyMD. I also began to speak as a professional speaker and emcee events live on stage! So much for that phobia! Now I am midcareer and also squarely in midlife myself. Building on my experience thus far, I have also dedicated myself to being much more of a whole-person physician, treating my patients not just for the one body part that they might have come to see me for, but looking at all the other factors that might play a role in their overall longevity and healthspan. Wine, Cheese and Orthopaedics: Last week I had the experience of being on the patient end when I took one of my children to a medical appointment. I had to take 3 hours off work to allow for commute to the appointment, waiting time, consult and commute back to the office. Whole morning gone. Seeing that most of my patients are still working, this gave me added insight into what patients go through when they come to see me and also gave me the idea to offer: Evening Consultations. One evening a month (initially) I'm going to offer consultations for patients who wish to consult with me outside of standard office hours (i.e. outside of 9-5). I'll offer consults 6-10pm and see what sort of uptake/response this gets. Referrers, I'm curious to know whether you think your patients will embrace this. And no - I'm not a workaholic. I'll finish up early that afternoon, pick my kids up from school, spend time with them and then go back to the office for the evening session. #hipreplacement #kneereplacement #convenience #orthopaedic #hip #knee
