For a few reasons, LGBTQ+ youth are at high risk for homelessness. Of the roughly 1.6 million young people who experience homelessness each year, up to 40% identify as LGBTQ+. According to a 2013 Child Trends article, these young people are also more likely to experience homelessness at a younger age than other unsheltered youth. Rejection from family is a common reason. About 50% of teens report getting a negative reaction when they come out, while 1 in 4 get kicked out of their homes. Without safe, stable options, these rejected kids often end up on the streets and vulnerable to violence, criminal activity, and other serious outcomes. #morecommonthanyouthink #endhomelessness #lgbtq+ #lgbtq #youthhomelessness #endthestigma #winterwalk 📃 Source: "10 Facts About Homelessness in the United States" Human Rights Careers

Monday Myth Busting MYTH: LGBTQ+ people cannot become foster carers In LGBTQ+ adoption and fostering week, we want to celebrate our LGBTQ+ carers. In a recent survey*, 32% of LGBTQ+ people stated that they are interested in fostering a child but 19% said they were “unsure if they would qualify because of their sexuality”. Being part of the LGBTQ+ community is not a barrier to fostering a child and diversity is valued at Fitzgerald Fostering. If you are interested in fostering and live in Berkshire or the surrounding area, please contact us today. Embracing My Child's True Self: A Journey of Love and Advocacy. As the CEO of Webhead and a mother to a member of the LGBTQ+ community, my journey has been one of love, protection, and advocacy. Supporting my child in a world often marked by intolerance is challenging, but crucial. Growing up as a U.S.-born Hispanic, I understand discrimination. However, my child's experiences have shown me new dimensions of resilience. At Webhead, we've always championed tolerance and inclusivity, values I carry into my home. For other parents, here’s my advice: Unconditional Love: Ensure your child feels safe and cherished. Education and Empathy: Learn about the LGBTQ+ community to offer better support. Advocate for Acceptance: Speak out against hate and discrimination.Build a Support Network: Connect with other parents and allies.Celebrate Their Identity: Encourage your child to express themselves proudly.Despite challenges, there is a growing movement of love and acceptance. Together, we can create a world where everyone lives their true selves without fear. #TeamPride #LoveIsLove #LGBTQSupport #webhead30yrs #HispanicPride #WebheadCEO

For all youth, it is critical to feel encouraged, validated and supported in their identity development. But, despite their large numbers in the foster care system, LGBTQ+ youth have been relatively invisible as many do not feel safe telling their foster families or social workers about having same-sex attractions or questioning their gender identity. If professionals are ill-equipped to work with youth who identify as LGBTQ+, whether intentional or not, the quality of case management and treatment planning is significantly compromised. Facing homelessness and having to find suitable private rental accommodation is already incredibly hard. For someone who identifies as LGBTQ+ this challenge is often magnified. It's not just about finding a place to stay, but finding a home with roommates, landlords, and a local area that is LGBTQ+ friendly. The importance of safety and security cannot be overstated. It's crucial to find somewhere you can live comfortably and authentically as yourself. Your home should be a place of refuge where you feel respected and accepted. If you’re thinking about listing a room or know someone who is, think about how to advertise this in as much of an inclusive way as is possible . Also, have discussions with those around you about what more can be done to make people feel welcomed and safe. #LGBTQ #Homelessness #SafeHousing #InclusiveCommunity
