This Pride Month, let's highlight the significant strides made in instructional design in the Philippines, particularly in fostering diversity and inclusion for LGBTQ+ students. - Integrating LGBTQ+ histories and issues into education ensures all students feel represented and valued. - Anti-bullying programs and inclusive policies protect LGBTQ+ students, creating a supportive atmosphere. - Educators are equipped with the skills to effectively support LGBTQ+ students. - Online resources and virtual safe spaces offer additional support for LGBTQ+ learners. These inclusive practices enhance the educational experience, fostering a sense of belonging and improving engagement and performance. Inclusive education helps all students develop empathy and social awareness, preparing them for a diverse world. As we celebrate Pride Month, let's continue to advocate for and implement inclusive educational practices. By doing so, we ensure every student has access to an affirming and equitable education. Here's to creating learning environments where every student can succeed and feel proud of who they are.

Actively seeking a full time position and excitedly ready for new opportunities in different sectors in addition to education.
After 20+ years of teaching, at the end of last school year, I chose to step away from the classroom and dip my toes into the DEI space waters. I made this move for several reasons - the main reason being the homophobia I encountered both from middle school-aged students and their parents. After facilitating two separate conversations that related to the LGBTQ+ Community, which, as a lesbian myself, I am part of, were trying to begin an open discussion/conversation about tolerance, acceptance, and empathy towards LGBTQ+ people. Students were not forced to participate, but they did need to be respectful as participants and as listeners. The students who identified as a part of the Queer Community felt safe sharing their own experiences and because one shared, the others followed, as did the students who are allies. It was a beautiful moment that we all shared in - some listened uncomfortably but respectfully, some shared their own experiences as queer kids, and some shared their anti-queer opinions. It was beautiful until the following day when I learned that a few parents had called my school’s main office to complain and question whether the curriculum I was using for these discussions was approved by the admin. It was honestly shocking to me seeing how it was only a brief discussion and they did not have to participate, but let’s be real - the complaints weren’t about the curriculum or the discussion. No, it was about fear - fear of something different, whether that meant different religious beliefs, different sexual identities, different gender identities, or just differing opinions on the matter. Fear is a powerful force and it was at that moment that I knew exactly what I needed to do - help facilitate learning about diversity, equity, and inclusion through the revealing of historical truths such as the Holocaust, the Civil War, and the Black Lives Matter Movement. This is one reason why I KNOW I’m meant to be a part of the Facing History & Ourselves team. I can’t wait to share the other reasons with you in my interview for the National Program Associate of the West Coast. #FacingHistory #Education #SocialJustice #ProfessionalDevelopment #Equity #CivicEngagement #ProgramAssociate #WestCoast #EducationLeadership

From LSE Few LGBTQ+ science and engineering instructors come out to students, despite potential benefits LGBTQ+ science and engineering instructors rarely come out to their undergraduate students, but students do not react negatively and surprisingly report higher rapport when an instructor comes out https://lnkd.in/gyyUNfEg

Diversity initiatives at two Virginia universities may be at risk -- following the trend of targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion programming in higher ed across the country. It is crucial that DEI education remains comprehensive and effective for the safety and success of underserved students. Our mission of empowering LGBTQ students through education includes promoting an environment of equity and inclusion that these attacks seek to dismantle. https://lnkd.in/gcRsCUCD

TEDx Speaker | Coaching educational leaders that empower school communities to make transformational, generational change| Founder of Empowered Educator
Continuing to celebrate 🏳️🌈 PRIDE 🏳️🌈 month and elevating LGBTQ voices!! This episode featuring another powerhouse and INCREDIBLE guest on Take Notes, Eric Williamson. This conversation was 🔥 https://lnkd.in/gd3qtgGn Why does representation and diversity in the classroom matter? How does it make an impact on how our students view themselves? Our students need trusted adults who are available to answer questions about identity and therefore can make a difference in their lives in the long term. Encouraging conversations about all sorts of intersections of identity in a safe and honest space promotes belonging. As educators, we have the ability to create the type of spaces that support young people to flourish and thrive. Welcome to episode 3 of Take Notes with Jen Rafferty! In this episode, I’m speaking with Eric Williamson! He is a former conductor with the Grammy Award-winning Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and music teacher at PS 32 in Brooklyn. Eric has also joined the national facilitation team of the Human Rights Campaign - Welcoming Schools Program, the nation's largest bullying prevention, and LGBTQ+ inclusive education initiative We explore the effects of insufficient education available to teachers on handling this topic, and how self-reflection and personal development can be a catalyst for change. Also, how a simple mindset shift can help us lean into conflict, and uncomfortable situations so these vital conversations can be had to better serve our students. Today is all about inclusion and cultivating communities for belonging for our youth, and the difference having these conversations makes in students’ lives. As educators, we get to foster safety for our students, even when it’s not easy. Because feeling safe to be our most authentic selves is how we all grow and shine! Take a listen, and take notes!

Over the past two years, we've awarded more than $1 million to schools across the United States, funding projects that uplift, empower, and support the well-being of local LGBTQ+ students. With the need to support LGBTQ+ youth more important than ever, we're doing it again.50 States, 50 Grants, 5000 Voices is back for a third year, and we want to make schools better for LGBTQ+ students. We know not all of you are educators... or LGBTQ+ students. But chances are if you're supporting our work, you know a teacher or an LGBTQ+ student. And that means we need your help. We can only award grant money if folks apply. We need you to send this email to anyone and everyone who might benefit from this grant money. Maybe it's to build a gender-affirming closet. Sponsor a school-wide Pride festival. Fill a library with LGBTQ+ inclusive books. The possibilities are ENDLESS. And if you happen to know someone in one of the following places — Alaska, Florida, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, and Washington D.C. — even better. This year there will be a special emphasis on prioritizing those states where projects have yet to be funded. Middle and high school students and teachers across the U.S., Washington DC, and U.S. territories can apply now through April 1. This year's grant opportunity is supported by AMERICAN EAGLE OUTFITTERS INC. and its customers, the MAC Cosmetics, and Tumblr. We can't wait to see those applications.
