I had the privilege of participating with a diverse group of speakers in Idaho Listens, a project by Boise State University. A lesson in the importance of sharing our values with respect and civility across different walks of life and in listening. In today's interconnected world, it's crucial that we approach interactions with empathy and respect, recognizing the inherent value in every individual's beliefs and experiences. 2nd annual Neighbourhood Conference for policing colleagues and partners, statutory and voluntary. Community Engagement is the focus and rightly so...

As you prepare to ride out for the weekend, I'd like you to consider the words of Chiwuike (Chi-Chi) Owunwanne, sharing that "Within the Corporate Responsibility realm, a community engagement officer is a convener, a connecter, a conduit, and a resource." To continue the alliterative thought I'd also suggest that community engagement officers are collaborators, communicators and contributors to the improvement of the community. Stay conscious and carry on.

I’ve joined a few paid communities and they were AWFUL. Not gonna lie. People just complaining or bonding over complaints. An all women’s community that was just bashing men. People full of self-promotion . People not really appreciating the value of peer collaboration and accountability. Listening to respond not listening to understand. But at its core the idea of communities, of peer groups, advisories, mentoring…. It’s about learning from others, fostering relationships, accountability. So tell me… what are some GOOD paid communities out there that get the concept of collaboration and support to help achieve goals or learn. Enough of the negative.. let’s hear about the good ones. 🌟 Invoking Conversations on Privilege 🌟 At The Rock Cheltenham, we believe in nurturing not just the talents, but also the empathy and awareness of our young members. Last week, during our evening groups, we delved into a crucial discussion on privilege. We orchestrated an eye-opening activity where our youths stood in a line, taking steps forward or backwards based on statements reflecting positive or negative privileges they have experienced. It was a powerful visual representation of the varying advantages and disadvantages individuals face from the outset. Once the young people could see where everyone was stood they noticed that some people were standing in front and some behind. Showing that everyone had a different start in life depending on their privilege. The activity aimed not only to raise awareness but also to instil a deeper understanding of the disparities in privilege that exist within our society. By seeing firsthand how privilege can shape one's starting point in life, our participants gained valuable insights into the complexities of social dynamics. Through initiatives like this, we strive to foster empathy, critical thinking, and a sense of social responsibility in our young members. Company – community ‘situationships’: Can they be avoided? >> Often in our roles as business or community professionals, we encounter what we might call 'company-community 'situationships'. Companies and communities coexist like neighbors, yet the trust between them is minimal. >> There are no clear commitments, just expectations that each party will be accepting of the other's behaviour. >> Conversations tend to be superficial rather than substantive, and the potential for mutual accountability is almost non-existent. In the world of community engagement, misinformation can have a devastating impact. Recently, a misunderstanding within a local project led to the spread of unfounded rumors about my role and intentions. While challenging, this experience emphasizes the importance of clear communication and mutual respect. Thankfully, the literature offers guidance on how to overcome misunderstandings in community projects. Establishing open lines of communication, practicing empathy, and active listening are all essential tools for resolving conflicts and rebuilding trust (Thompson and Walters, 2023; Patel, 2024). In light of this experience, I am committed to initiating a series of dialogues aimed at clarifying misunderstandings and reinforcing the foundation of trust and respect that our community project is built upon. I am grateful for the patience and willingness to engage in constructive conversation from all involved. Let this experience remind us of the strength we derive from facing challenges together, guided by openness and mutual respect. Everyone deserves to belong. We’ve established belonging as our core belief and an antidote to the discord, dehumanization, and violence occurring in so many of our communities. So what exactly does belonging mean? More specifically, what does this concept of structural belonging really mean and why is it critical to creating the world we all deserve? Give me 60 seconds and I’ll tell you. The answer is not as soft as you might think.

I value the #ExpertAdvice from Ray Dalio every day! The words "Common Mission" are crucial to the strategic planning process. It is also important to know WHY someone is not consistent with, or disloyal to, the mission. #1 it could be that the person is a narcissist and wants to run their own business their own way. #2 could be that the common mission is not acceptable to everyone. Ray Dalio's book, "Principles" is a great tool to ensure the "Common Mission" is accepted by the team, consistently applied, and it is truly common for the entire team.
