Today is #MayDay, a moment to honor the historic gains made by workers and the labor movement. Workers are still fighting for their rights and there is no better example of this than the warehouse workers of Amazon and Walmart. These two mega-corporations employ abusive and invasive surveillance tactics to get even richer at the expense of workers' rights, safety, and dignity. In solidarity with these workers today, say enough is enough: https://lnkd.in/eypAGZyu

As reported, Amazon workers DID strike on Black Friday. "Now in its fourth year, the Make Amazon Pay movement involved protests and strikes in over 30 countries in 2023. Over 80 unions, organisations, and environmentalists participated, with action including strikes in the US, UK, Italy, Spain, and Germany; climate protests in Canada, the UK, Italy, Germany, Japan, Ireland, and the Netherlands; and demands from Bangladeshi garment workers for a minimum wage of $209 per month." The movement submitted a letter to Amazon with five demands, including improving the workplace, providing job security to all workers (and eliminating "casual" employment"), respecting workers' rights (and stop "union busting"), improve safety, and operate sustainably. #CSCCSCM #Unions #GMB #Amazon #workersrights #supplychain #logistics #lastmile #ecommerce #blackfriday

On this day, Black Friday, three years ago, Amazon warehouse workers and their progressive allies co-ordinated a global protest for the first time in the company’s history, under the banner ‘Make Amazon Pay’. During the pandemic, Amazon—its founder, Jeff Bezos, the richest person in the world—had forced workers to be at the warehouses without protective equipment. But on Black Friday they pushed back with strikes and actions in 15 countries to demand safety and dignity. Today, Amazon workers in Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and the United States are making their demand to Make Amazon Pay even louder, with a new wave of strikes. It is a display of the collective power they have built, together with supporters in their workplaces, on the streets and in parliaments. https://lnkd.in/ezf4k3CW

I’ve been following the news about growing cries for unionization in different companies and here are some of my thoughts: Fair treatment and respect are non-negotiable for a positive workplace culture. The Amazon Labor Union (ALU) and Teamsters are teaming up to demand just that. Despite a win at the Staten Island warehouse, the ALU faced major pushback from Amazon. Now, with the heavyweight Teamsters backing them, they're pushing for higher wages, longer breaks, and safer conditions. This powerful alliance is a wake-up call for companies stuck in old ways. It shows that unions and businesses can and should collaborate for a respectful, sustainable workplace culture, to avoid impacting business results. Adding fuel to the fire, Amazon was slapped with a $5.9M fine for violating California’s Warehouse Quota Law, which exposed workers to harsh productivity quotas. This fine highlights the critical need for transparency and fair practices. ""Organizing workers is a different skill than administering a union"" A great quote from the former National Labor Relations Board Chair, and good advice for anyone trying to stand up any sort of group. And I speak from experience. In this case we're talking about the Amazon Labor Union. "The union's troubles since its victory in early 2022 illustrate the difficult path that grassroots organizers face. They also represent a different outcome than what activists hoped for—a wave of other warehouses following the lead set by New York workers." Initial fervor in any situation usually dwindles, and in this case, the post-victory reality has set in. Dissent in the union's leadership, lack of donations and financial support, high turnover of Amazon workers, and a host of other normal business-y issues are taking their toll. "Companies have advantages in unionization contests, including the ability to hold mandatory meetings and have more accurate information about their workforce than any union has, according to labor researchers. Workers also must generally organize at one facility or store at a time." #CSCCSCM #unions #labor #organization #employeerights #amazon #NLRB #supplychain #logistics

Amazon employees staged widespread strikes across Europe on Friday, protesting the working conditions of the US e-commerce titan during one of the year's busiest shopping periods. Coordinated by the UNI Global Union, this campaign encompassed over 30 countries, coinciding with Black Friday—a post-Thanksgiving retail frenzy known for its slashed prices, now propelled globally by Amazon's extensive holiday discount period running from November 17 to November 27. In Germany, Verdi, a trade union, estimated approximately 2,000 workers striking across six Amazon fulfillment centers—a significant presence in Amazon's second-largest sales market from the previous year. However, an Amazon representative in Germany downplayed the scale, highlighting fair wages starting at over 14 euros ($15.27) per hour and assuring dependable Black Friday order deliveries. Across the English Channel, over 200 workers participated in strikes at Amazon's Coventry warehouse, aiming for improved wages and working conditions. The demand echoed with chants for a pay increase to £15 ($18.69) per hour. Amazon UK maintained that starting pay varies by location, currently ranging between £11.80 and £13 an hour, slated for a potential increase to £12.30 to £13 by April 2024, assuring minimal disruption due to the strike. In Italy, conflicting reports emerged regarding strikes, with the CGIL union claiming over 60% of workers at the Castel San Giovanni warehouse participating, countered by Amazon's assertion of more than 86% operational attendance, ensuring no impact on their functions. Meanwhile, in Spain, the CCOO union scheduled one-hour strikes for Amazon's warehouse and delivery staff on Cyber Monday. The French scenario involved protests organized by the anti-globalization group Attac, targeting Amazon's parcel lockers across the country—places often used by customers to collect their orders. Attac condemned Black Friday as a celebration of excessive production and consumption, claiming to have targeted 40 lockers in France. #PakistanNow #Amazon #ecommerce #BlackFriday2023 #shoppingonline #shopping2023 Pakistan Now

This trend relates to high cost inflationary union salaries, benefits & work rules that have led to more affordable alternatives as third party deliveries from companies such as Amazon & Walmart which organizations have moved to use in a deflationary trend. Similarly the UAW high cost inflationary union salaries, benefits & work rules have led to vehicle plant closings and layoffs with more to come.
