A key trend in the petrochemicals industry has been its decisive shift towards decarbonisation. 🌎♻️
This shift is driving the adoption of sustainable business models, such as increased utilisation of bio-based feedstock and growing interest in recyclable polymers.
These innovative technologies, pivotal in supporting major players' decarbonisation efforts, also provide opportunities for expansion. For instance, LyondellBasell’s recent acquisition which secured 25% of the joint venture between Agilyx and ExxonMobil was a decisive move to accelerate their plastic waste recycling capacity.
This deal is just one of many key transactions we have featured. For a comprehensive list of transactions, we have been tracking in the petrochemicals sector, please reach out to our Head of Data Matthew Wise.

DIC Corporation announced that last month it acquired certification under ISCC PLUS, an international certification scheme for sustainable products, for a product manufactured by subsidiary DIC Epoxy (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.
ISCC PLUS is a voluntary scheme that attests to the proper management of recycled and biomass-derived raw materials across the supply chain, including in production processes.
This certification facilitates the use of raw materials to which the mass balance approach has been applied.
Additionally, the use of mass balance bio-allocated raw materials is expected to reduce the DIC Group’s largest product carbon footprint by 19.4%, compared with conventional products that use fossil-derived raw materials.

ExxonMobil currently operates one of the largest #advancedrecycling facilities in North America. We are investing to expand our operations by adding a second advance recycling unit at our facility in Baytown, Texas which recently received a positive final investment decision (FID).
This is another important step toward our goal to increase our capacity to process 1 billion pounds of plastic waste per year by year-end 2026.
Exxtend™ technology for advanced recycling is a proven technology that can help accelerate a #circulareconomy for plastic – increasing the range of plastics that can be recycled while helping to address the plastic waste challenge.

Sharing this video on a fascinating topic: our Exxtend(TM) technology in action in Texas, where we have a chemical recycling unit with the capacity to process up to 40,000 metric tons of plastic waste per year.
Chemical recycling, also known as advanced recycling, can play an important role in addressing the plastic waste challenge. It is complementary to traditional mechanical recycling, as it can help transform hard-to-recycle plastics into virgin-quality raw materials that can be used to make a range of products.
There is rising demand to increase recycling capacity around the world, far exceeding the capacity of mechanical recycling, so there is a great opportunity to deploy this new technology in other parts of the world including Europe.
ExxonMobil is currently considering the construction of a pilot project for a similar facility at our Antwerp refinery, which could be scaled up quickly to a processing capacity of up to 40,000 tons of plastic waste per year.
This project would contribute to the recycling ambitions of Flanders, Belgium and the EU. It would also be a crucial investment for the future of the Antwerp refinery. At the moment, however, disagreements over permits risk derailing the project or seeing it carried out in other regions.
ExxonMobil plans to add up to 500,000 metric tons per year of chemical recycling capacity by year-end 2026 across multiple sites globally. With a supportive policy framework, I am confident that we can bring some of these investments to our region.

Fossil-free and near-zero emission steel is one piece of our decarbonization puzzle. Low-carbon aluminum is another. We have made some pioneering firsts with the implementation of more sustainable materials, but we don’t stop until every piece of the puzzle is in place.
So, it is exciting to reveal that we have signed a partnership agreement with BASF that will see us deliver even more innovations into low-carbon materials, such as recycled plastic. To show our transparency in working together towards a net zero value chain, the agreement was signed on a clear container with certified Biomass Balanced Polyamide granules—or fossil-free plastic—inside.
Partnership is the action we take to achieve our ambitious aim of net zero value chain greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. BASF Automotive Solutions
📣 Member organisation GEMINOR has launched on-the-move quality checks for waste-derived fuels.
🏭 Geminor is implementing new quality control measures on secondary fuels under transport. The initial tests on RDF and SRF are being conducted by an independent laboratory.
✔ Wojciech Oset, Account and TFS Manager at Geminor Poland, explained the key role that these tests will play in Geminor’s quality assessment process:
“We have encountered variability in the quality of waste from producers over time, which makes random quality checks a necessity. By performing these tests, we aim to assure both sides of the value chain – the waste producers and the off-takers – that the waste-derived fuels meet rigorous and expected standards.”
