📣 Senior leaders from the UK food industry have come together in a historic pledge in support of the Coronation Food Project. It encourages major supermarkets and food manufacturers to join FareShare's innovative "Alliance Manufacturing" programme to redistribute even more surplus food to charities nationwide. The Alliance Manufacturing programme, a vital element of the Project, seeks to unlock more surplus food for redistribution by bringing project members together to share their surplus, underutilised and donated resources in all forms. 💬 George Wright, CEO of FareShare said: "The response from the food industry leaders and their teams has been incredible.” And it's just the start. If everyone in the food industry joins the alliance, no matter how large or small, the combined force would be game-changing. 🍅🍏🍎Do you have a favourite recipe that uses up surplus ingredients? It could be in a charity cookbook! Plan Zheroes - The Zero Food Waste Heroes are a charity connecting businesses with surplus food to nearby charities who can use it. They run several volunteer-led surplus food collections from markets across London, including London’s iconic Borough Market. 📚📚This Autumn, Plan Zheroes will be making a new cookbook and they are inviting all who care about food-surplus to join them in this celebration. 🖊️🖊️At Women In The Food Industry we spoke to one of their Brand Ambassadors, food writer, Kristen Frederickson, about the project. She said: “Food waste – we all feel strongly about it, how to work to prevent it, how to celebrate our available ingredients in a joyful and delicious way. 🍞🫑“That’s why, this Autumn, Plan Zheroes will be making a new cookbook and we’re inviting the food-surplus community to join us in this celebration. Did you know that food that has lost its shelf life in grocery stores is often still suitable for consumption? We are honored to partner with Banco de Alimentos in Brazil for our annual OpenText Holiday Foodbank campaign. Luciana Chinaglia Quintao from Banco De Alimentos shares how they are thinking outside of the box to find new ways to fight hunger: “We collect food that has lost its shelf value in commerce and industry but is still suitable for consumption. Instead of discarding vegetables, fruit, pasta, and other food items, our partners donate their surplus food to Banco de Alimentos, and from there we distribute to those in need. We also educate our communities and partners on how to use food sources to their fullest potential, such as proper handling and storage, and how to use leaves, stems, peels, and seeds.” This year, in partnership with Banco de Alimentos, OpenTexters participated in National Food Collection Day in Brazil, where they volunteered their time to educate customers at local grocery stores about the need in their communities and accepted food donations. St. Patrick Center food pantry needs your help! Their pantry provides a critical service to their clients, allowing them to shop weekly for food, toiletries, paper products and more. Their food pantry relies fully on the in-kind and financial contributions supplied by donors. Because the demand for the food pantry services is reaching record highs — around 350 clients benefitted from the food pantry in June — the food pantry stock is nearing depletion. With great urgency, I am asking for your help in the following ways: Donating food pantry and fresh/frozen items listed: Non-perishable boxed meals, rice dinners, soup and ramen, cereal, and canned goods are all in short supply. Struggling to pay for food and/or rent is a painful problem a lot of Canadians are feeling and it isn't going to go away any time soon; It will get worse before it gets better. Many of these organizations that help folks with food are having inventory problems now which is a bad sign going into the new year. I've talked with non-profits that provide simple food solutions at a community level with CPGs and they are having struggles with product shortages. There is a program for food banks to offer tax credits to farmers for farm food but it comes with a catch: https://lnkd.in/ekt9_jvQ If they get into farm food outside of a CPG then they need food handlers and need some level of food safety. Is there a tax credit for food banks to offer for donations for CPG donations?
