Communities across Maine and throughout the country are facing an affordable housing crisis, impacting students at alarming rates. "Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a 400% increase in the number of homeless students in the Biddeford and Saco school districts and even more children are expected to become homeless this month as winter rentals end to make way for summer tourists." It is critical that affordable housing opportunities are available, which is why Fair Tide is working with landlords to provide affordable housing in the private market now while also developing new units of permanent, supportive, and affordable housing to open later this year and next. https://lnkd.in/eC-DvrqQ

Global real estate leader, strategist and deal maker, providing expert advisory and consulting services for corporations, public and private entities and non-profits
About 4 - 5 years ago, while working with our LAUSD team that serves our students and families experiencing homelessness I came to understand that just because someone can secure a Sec. 8 voucher, it is meaningless if you cannot find a landlord to accept it or a unit that is available. Then I came to understand how project based vouchers work and thought, what if we could create a situation where much like veterans and seniors, families with students at LAUSD could be identified as the preferred group to secure rental units in an affordable housing project partially financed through the local housing authority and using project based vouchers. If we could do that, we could begin to build a pipeline of opportunity for our families in need. Well I am excited to announce that yesterday we celebrated the opening of a new, affordable housing project, Sun King Apartments in Sun Valley. In cooperation with Many Mansions we created what may be the first partnership of its kind in the country where a developer secured project based vouchers naming families with students enrolled at a local school district as the preferred group to lease units in the project. This unique partnership has provided 25 families with school aged children, many previously homeless, with a safe and secure place to call home. One of the residents told me yesterday that what we did literally changed lives. It still brings tears to my eyes today. It is days like this that give my job meaning. If you are a developer looking to use project based vouchers to finance your development or a housing development that accepts Sec. 8 vouchers, please contact me. There are more than 15,000 students who attend LASUD schools daily that are experiencing homelessness. We know the number is higher as those are the families that self report. So please help us provide a stable affordable place for these students and their families to live. Thank you. #affordablehousing #education #workforcehousing #teachersandschoolemployees #teachers #educatorhousing #education #Section8 https://lnkd.in/g7n5S4Ap

At a time when many Americans are feeling uneasy about the state of the American economy, many are citing their concern about housing prices and the percentage of one's income being spent on housing and utilities. However, we also know that the lack of supply of housing of any type increases both the demand and the prices of both owner and renter-occupied units. There have been innovative efforts in much of New England to remedy the situation. Chapter 40 B in Massachusetts other efforts to achieve a right to safe and affordable housing have had mixed results. Often, this is because under the guise of local control and putting the issues to a vote, that which people from across the political spectrum want is interrupted. It is done through race-baiting and stereotyping of renters, and sensationalizing stories about bad tenants and even affordable housing of any kind. Moreover, moral assumptions about the virtues of homeowners and the supposed moral deficiencies of renters creates a situation where no affordable housing of any kind will be built. This is despite the pro-family and pro-working class rhetoric of opposition both within the progressive populations in Massachusetts and Maine and also that of moderate to conservative areas. We can do better than NIMBY. We can listen to the stories of those whom housing policy is truly impacting. Jesus says we will be judged by how we treat the least amongst us. This is where the Christian right and the Christian left and other people of good will can work together so that the goal of achieving zero homelessness is achieved. Yet, the story of Portland, ME is a sad story about how housing is still seen as a commodity and not a right. https://lnkd.in/gEZwuCpa
Maine has never needed housing like it does today. The State commissioned a housing study in October 2023 that showed Maine is short 38,000+ homes, and needs an additional 40,000 more by 2030 to meet our workforce and population needs. The State has invested unprecedented levels of funding in building affordable housing in Maine over the last four years. Yet this week, three Maine towns voted on whether to build housing in their communities. Two of them voted no! Fair housing and access to housing for all, in all communities in Maine, must be universal. Join MAHC in advocating for housing for all people in Maine.

Fair Housing News | HUD Awards Over $32 Million to Fight Housing Discrimination; Funding will support and promote fair housing nationwide WASHINGTON - Today, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded $31.7 million from its FY 2024 budget to support 75 fair housing organizations across the nation through the Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP). These funds are being directed to second- and third-year multi-year grantees of the Private Enforcement Initiative (PEI) to continue their ongoing fair housing enforcement endeavors on a national scale. The grant funds will empower the recipients to carry out fair housing enforcement through a range of activities, including conducting thorough investigations, implementing fair housing testing to uncover instances of discrimination in both rental and sales markets, and taking the necessary steps to file fair housing complaints either with HUD or equivalent state and local agencies. The grantees will also engage in educational and outreach initiatives to educate the public, housing providers, and local government bodies about the rights and obligations outlined in the Fair Housing Act and the fair housing services that grantees provide. “Ensuring fair access to quality and affordable housing for people who have been historically discriminated against is one of the foundations of our mission,” said HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman. “As part of our commitment to promote inclusive communities around the country, we support local governments and private organizations to ensure they have the tools they need to enforce the Fair Housing Act. Today’s awards are providing significant resources to our private partners on the ground.” HUD is also extending financial support to an additional five grantees -- the Family Housing Advisory Services, Rogers Park Community Council, Housing Opportunities Project for Excellence (HOPE), Inc., Intermountain Fair Housing Council, Inc., and Fair Housing Council of Riverside County, Inc. under the Education and Outreach Initiative (EOI) component -- using $500,000 in unspent funds from the FY 2023 budget. “The Fair Housing Initiative Program continues to be a bedrock for empowering our state and local partners in advancing fair housing at the grassroots level,” said Diane M. Shelley, HUD’s Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity. “The funds provided today will drive meaningful progress and create lasting positive impact within the communities we serve.” To learn more, go to https://lnkd.in/eqaThHF.

Not only is the housing situation shocking here. But the impact on children’s mental and physical health is huge. 4x more likely to have mental ill health, asthma and nutritional imbalance. Trauma, education impact and general wellbeing is all significantly impacted. This children are our future. How can we treat them like this in one of the richest countries in the world. All those prospective parliamentary candidates out there, how are you going to address this issue and change the narrative for these children? It needs cross government collaboration and some very significant commitments cross party and involvement of the housing providers, local statutory services and VCSE to be funded to deliver the change.
"1 in 23 children in London are homeless – that’s one child in every classroom. That sobering fact made me stop and reflect when we talked about it over the kitchen table. Sadly, the scale of the housing crisis across country means this is the reality for too many kids and families, and we need to do more, together, to make a difference." "Private involvement in the delivery of the most affordable homes needs to be embraced too. We’ve heard positive noises from key Labour figures about the role of ‘patient private capital’ in building new homes. This is a step-change from just a few years ago, possibly in recognition of the funding challenge any government will face after the election." #housing #housingcrisis In Housing Today, chief executive at The Hyde Group, Andy Hulme, discusses the homes output of the housing provider, the reality of the housing crisis, as well as how public and private partnerships can heighten housing delivery. https://lnkd.in/eYuuXkH6

Housing data from 2021 shows that 33% of families with children had a housing cost burden, meaning they paid more than half of their income on housing. That same year, 6% of homes with children had physically inadequate housing. In 2022, 17% of children experienced unstable housing, which includes living in households that were unable to pay rent or mortgage on time, moved frequently or were homeless at some point in their lives. In fact, stable housing is a foundation for long term academic success for kids. Having the same place to hang and find your backpack reduces the stress of not having your homework to turn in. Waking up in the same home starts the day with confidence and hope. Soon 4,000 volunteers will gather in the Twin Cities for the 2024 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project! From September 29 to October 4, this weeklong homebuilding event will bring people from near and far to The Heights development on the Greater East Side of St. Paul. The Carter Build continues to direct the necessary attention to everything affordable housing does for people, and what an honor that the Twin Cities has been selected. That said, safe and affordable housing is a right everyone in this country should have and it should transcend politics. We met with Kristine (Kristie) S. Executive Director for St. Croix Valley Habitat for Humanity to understand and amplify the impact safe and affordable housing has on kids short and long term successes, not only academically, but on mental health and wellbeing.
