On Monday, I represented Luna Foundation CIC at the All Party Parliamentary Group for Childhood Trauma, attending the group’s meeting virtually. (Image taken at an earlier visit to Westminster.) The meeting’s focus on Education Policy and Practice couldn't be more timely or critical and it was great to see the energy in the group to create meaningful change. We delved into what's needed to promote recovery from childhood trauma and prevent further traumatisation, particularly in light of concerning trends like increasing exclusions and suspensions. It's heartbreaking to know that children who've experienced trauma are at the greatest risk, facing challenges that can impact their educational outcomes and even involvement in the criminal justice system. What's concerning is the disconnect between the guidance and practice. While the DfE encourages trauma-informed approaches in schools, the updated Behaviour in Schools document fails to even acknowledge trauma or adversity. This gap between policy and reality highlights the urgent need for change. At the Luna Foundation, we witness firsthand the profound impact of trauma on children's lives, in particular those children who have lost a parent through suicide. That's why we're dedicated to advocating for trauma-informed practices in schools and beyond, ensuring that every child receives the support they need to thrive. Every child deserves a supportive environment that nurtures their mental and emotional well-being. It's time to bridge the divide between policy and practice, to ensure that our education system truly serves the needs of all children, especially those who've experienced trauma. Let's work together to create a safer, more inclusive future for every child. Did you know that 10% of children have experienced 3 or more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)? This places them at high risk for poor health (including mental health) and socioeconomic outcomes across their lives. Reducing ACEs and boosting early child neurodevelopment is the most effective way to save future chronic healthcare costs and boost societal productivity. But the needed interventions are complex. I love this overview of the landscape by the Center for Community Resilience at The George Washington University- Milken Institute School of Public Health. Our global child development team is working on integrated solutions that prevent ACEs and build resilience through maximized neurodevelopment in early childhood.

Join us for the eighth Think Bigger Do Good webinar featuring paper author Sharon Hoover, Ph.D. of the University of Maryland and Joe Pyle, M.A. of the Scattergood Foundation. They will discuss how resources could be best allocated to facilitate the delivery of effective and comprehensive supports and services to children and adolescents in schools. Schools are the main delivery sites for youth mental health services. Many districts have adopted comprehensive school mental health systems (CSMHS) to provide a multitiered approach comprising mental health promotion, prevention, and intervention to students via partnerships between school and community health and behavioral health providers. COVID-19 relief funding and other new federal and state investments in school mental health have led to expansions of school mental health programming in most states. An impending federal funding cliff necessitates an examination of how to wisely invest now to achieve the greatest positive future impact on youth mental health. https://lnkd.in/eypHAXqH

It's my first day back from parental leave and I'm thrilled to share a new publication that highlights the importance of using relational approaches to support children in OOHC heal from developmental trauma. We know that role modelling emotional regulation (known as coregulation) is vital for the relational safety and stability of children in OOHC. But how can carers be better supported to coregulate with children in their care?  We learned that organisations must operationalise trauma-informed supports for caseworkers so they have the capacity to model a calm state for carers who can then model a calm state with children. From the playgrounds where children play to the determined strides of our staff, every step matters. 👦 The Youth: Our children explore the beautiful green spaces and play equipment with boundless energy. As they engage in physical activities, they build resilience, strength, and joy. 💪 The Staff: Across all our locations, almost 50 dedicated staff members completed a 5-week walking challenge. Together, they accumulated 12 million steps, showcasing commitment, camaraderie, and care. 🌿 The Common Thread: Whether it's a child's energetic play or an adult's purposeful stride, movement is medicine. It heals hearts, clears minds, and connects souls. 🧠 Insights from the Study: A study published in JAMA Pediatrics reveals that higher fitness levels in children and adolescents correlate with lower risks of depressive symptoms, anxiety, and ADHD.
