Malta's innovation ecosystem is getting stronger. Today Malta Innovation Forum organised a stakeholder meeting bringing together 18 key innovation stakeholders. We had the opportunity to discuss... ✅ how we can strengthen Malta's innovation system through a systematic approach, specifically through the capacity building methodology, rather than letting it grow organically. ✅ the importance of having a common vision, synergies, and an alignment of purpose between all stakeholders ✅ Collaborative Governance and the best ways to collaborate. An ecosystem is a collaborative environment and thus collaboration is key. ✅ the opportunities, strengths, and weaknesses : the topics to focus on in future stakeholder meetings, both the "low hanging fruit" and the long term goals. We also had the opportunity to share the work Malta Innovation Forum did over the last few years related to Malta's innovation ecosystem. The CARIBEquity Facility is looking to support innovation ecosystem actors such as accelerators, incubators, academia, and other agencies supporting innovation (e.g., impact hubs). What are the awards? Non-reimbursable Technical Cooperation/Technical Assistance – Ecosystem Grants, EU funding: up to EUR300,000 / USD 321,225 Counterpart funds to be provided by the Applicant: 50% of the total budget, half in cash and half in kind Who can submit a proposal? Incubators, accelerators, academia, and other agencies supporting innovation. 📰 EBN Welcomes the Commission’s Funding for Regional Innovation Valleys, with 55+ EU|BICs Present We are excited to hear about the European Commission’s funding of €116 million for the Regional Innovation Valleys (RIVs) initiative, which aims to bolster competitiveness and foster innovation across the EU. In partnership with the EC, EBN actively promoted the call for RIVs among its members. This week the European Commission announced that 151 regions have been granted the RIV title, including over 55 regions with EU|BIC presence. This milestone was revealed on 19 June 2024 by Commissioners Iliana Ivanova and Elisa Ferreira during the European Committee of the Regions plenary session. As a network representing 175+ EU|BIC members in over 33 countries in Europe and beyond, EBN looks forward to the significant contributions our members will make to continuously grow their regional innovation capacities. By fostering innovation literacy, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration, and promoting sustainable economic development, EBN and its members are dedicated to ensuring the success of the RIVs and the broader New European Innovation Agenda. 👉 For more details, read the full announcement. The European Innovation Council (EIC) has just unveiled its 2025 work programme, with a €1.4 billion boost for deep tech research and high-potential start-ups, an increase of nearly €200 million from 2024. Key highlights include: - Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP) Scale Up Scheme: €300 million in 2025, offering larger investments (up to €30 million) in strategic technologies. - Grants & Blended Finance: Now up to €1.1 million for early-stage tech R&D, validation, commercialisation, and scaling. - Business Acceleration Services: Enhanced support for emerging companies, including a new pre-accelerator scheme. Tomorrow, I will be covering #KL20 organised by Kementerian Ekonomi. The two-day summit gathers key industry leaders on venture capital and chips like Phison’s CEO Dato’ KS Pua, ARM’s CK Tseng, Blue Chip Venture Capital Dato’ Lai Pin Yong and many more. Malaysia is poised to be the world’s top 20 startup countries by 2030 and a major player in the semiconductor, chips and high-tech industry - the Silicon Valley of the East. I understand that major announcements will be made tomorrow in the chips sector, venture capital and startup ecosystem.

I have been writing about Malaysian politics for more than a decade. I have talked to countless politicians, even the ones who are not yet in office. I predicted Syed Saddiq’s jump into politics when everyone around me said he was “not the type”, only for them to come back to me in shock that he became a politician. This anecdote is not to brag — I’m just sharing to demonstrate how keenly I observe Malaysian politics since I haven’t shared much about it here in recent years. The point here is that in all my years of observing and writing on politics in Malaysia, I must say that Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership style is a rare find. Look at the post below 👇🏼— look at his focus. Who’s the focus? Who’s he talking to? That’s right — he’s talking to people like me and you. He’s not talking to corporate. He’s not talking to elites. He’s talking to “ordinary” people, whom he made clear is the group of people that he thinks highly of. This year is Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s 25th anniversary, and they are well aware that they are currently an unpopular party when the leadership mentioned it at yesterday’s convention. This awareness is what makes them strategic thinkers. Whatever policies they come up with, this leadership style alone is enough to attract followers, for as long as they stay in authenticity and integrity of their values.
