Kaneez Zehra – Executive Director, SAQE and National Coordinator, PCE in her latest op-ed provides an analysis of the newly introduced Education Emergency in Pakistan. While applauding the government's commitments and initiatives, Zehra highlights glaring gaps. Regarding the two-month milestones as unrealistic, Zehra raises concerns over the sustainability of this initiative and calls for developing realistic timelines, which support incremental growth. She advocates for an inclusive approach, emphasizing cross-party commitment through a joint ‘Charter of Education’, dismantling the top-down approach, prioritization of localized interventions and a special preference to marginalized groups. Only, through collective ownership and active involvement of multi-sectoral stakeholders and realistic approaches, can we produce a more sustainable and inclusive education system for every child, states Zehra. Earlier this year at the Stakeholders’ Consultation Workshop on ECOWAS Regional Resilience Strategy for West Africa in Abuja, many called attention on the current realities of rapid population growth in #WestAfrica, with women and children most affected, noting how this contributes to increased demand for basic services, including #education. Innovative approaches to address the need of West African #youth are even more relevant when looking at a future where education systems will continue to face the challenge of meeting the needs of many children and youth who will struggle to access and stay in school. #AcceleratedEducation is key to tackle this challenge. The Government of #SierraLeone🇸🇱 is pioneering innovating ways to leverage evidence in education policy and planning in collaboration with Education.org, by launching National Guidelines that provide a clear, actionable, and high quality framework to actors working with out-of-school children, and set ambitions to expand national provisions for targeted education opportunities for this population. The Guidelines are available for all to consult here: https://lnkd.in/dWh5EUqV More insights on this journey below ⤵️
Sometimes the path tying the best evidence to policy and practice is long and and messy. This is not one of those times, though! With Education.org's innovative evidence pathway that maximizes the value of local evidence, and building on learning from our work to date, we've created pragmatic guidance for leaders at the country, regional, and global level for use in plans, policies, and guidelines such as the one below. Sierraloaded 🇸🇱 features #SierraLeone's recent unveiling of its first national accelerated education guidelines to support children and young people who have never been to school, or who have dropped out, and especially girls and those with learning differences or disabilities. Of special note is the emphasis on a holistic approach, ensuring that socioemotional learning is seen as supporting literacy and numeracy skill development. Sparked by Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh's Radical Inclusion policy, Education Minister Conrad Sackey's commitment to out of school children and youth, and Chief Education Officer Yatta Kanu's leadership, these guidelines are informed by the best evidence we've gathered and analyzed in the region, and reflect collaborations across the implementing community to ensure these guidelines are actionable and meet the needs of practitioners. Education.org is honored by the opportunity to have collaborated on this swift and effective effort and by the deep trust extended to us by Sierra Leone's education leaders during this effort. Improving primary education in Pakistan requires a multi-faceted approach. Here are some suggestions: 1. *Increase funding*: Allocate more resources to primary education, focusing on infrastructure development, teacher training, and provision of educational materials. 2. *Teacher training and support*: Provide regular training and development opportunities for teachers to enhance their skills and knowledge. 3. *Curriculum reform*: Update the curriculum to include modern and relevant content, emphasizing critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. 4. *Access and enrollment*: Implement initiatives to increase enrollment, particularly for girls and marginalized communities, and address regional disparities. 5. *Use of technology*: Leverage technology to enhance learning experiences, improve access, and increase engagement. 6. *Community engagement*: Foster partnerships with local communities, parents, and civil society organizations to promote education and ownership. 7. *Monitoring and evaluation*: Establish a robust monitoring and evaluation system to track progress, identify areas for improvement, and ensure accountability. 8. *Addressing poverty and nutrition*: Implement programs addressing poverty, hunger, and malnutrition to ensure students' basic needs are met, enabling them to focus on learning. 9. *Promoting inclusive education*: Ensure inclusive education for children with disabilities, and address gender and socio-economic disparities. 10. *Encouraging private sector involvement*: Collaborate with private organizations to supplement government efforts and bring in innovative solutions. By addressing these areas, Pakistan can improve primary education, laying a strong foundation for future generations' success.

The lack of education has become a major problem in our communities, particularly because social mobility is hindered without formal education. In 2020, during the peak of the pandemic, the Hopeful Leaders Night School was established. This initiative takes a holistic approach to adult education and recognises the importance of linking adult education and poverty alleviation policies. While there is much policy rhetoric around the importance of engaging individuals in education in the red zone areas (high mortality and gangsterism rates, etc.) of the Cape Flats, it has been proven that by motivating and supporting adults through formal education, we can also positively impact their households and families. The dream back then was to offer learning opportunities to adults on the Cape Flats as second and third chances in education. It is still our dream. We have experienced great success during Women's Month. We had 27 women earning bachelor's passes and 76 women earning diploma passes in 2024. This year, the lines of adults eager to obtain their high school diplomas stretched for miles. We have since expanded and have 7 schools now (with more opening), and we are proud to have many successful alumni who have gone on to enter universities and TVET colleges. Disclaimer: Permission has been obtained by the entities, to have their pictures taken and published. Join the Hopeful Leaders Night School Page where we change our realities one step at a time.

In Turkey, some parents compete to ensure their children receive quality education and care in the early years, which should have been provided by public services without cost. Some parents need financial resources to dream about quality education and care early on. Some teachers rush "advantaged" children from class to class to be exposed to all the possible branches they will need to gain the necessary skills required for competition and barely find the time to support their holistic development while trying to maintain a sustainable life for themselves. Some attempt to beat the odds in classrooms with 20 or more young children alone and with limited resources. Some children cannot find the time to slow down, play as they wish, enjoy spending time with their friends, and develop learning and thinking skills in the classroom. Many either try to be visible and express their needs and opinions in the crowd or lack access to early childhood education and care. Without having the right to protest the system, some youth compete with their peers to gain access to quality higher education and earn diplomas that can be easily monetized in the short run. Some are already thrown out of the system without even reaching it. This is called "the normal.". Why? Because these are what markets require and because we, the people, think this system is inevitable, irresistible, and irreplaceable. "Initially wake up and be aware," say Guy Roberts-Holmes and Peter Moss, and remind Foucault's advice: 'As soon as one can no longer think of things as one formerly thought them, transformation becomes very urgent, very difficult, and quite possible.'
