Earlier this month we attended the inaugural Biophilic Design Conference at the Barbican centre, organised by Dr. Vanessa Champion, founder of The Journal of Biophilic Design. This crowd-funded event highlighted the importance of connecting people to nature through thoughtful design. Over 40 inspiring speakers joined both in-person and online, for TED Talk-style presentations exploring the profound impact of biophilic design on mental health, well-being, the environment, and even economic benefits. Topics ranged from sensory designs in schools and the influence of light in workspaces to the psychological and financial advantages of sustainable, nature-integrated design. These themes align deeply with our practice’s ethos, especially around creating healthy homes and introducing sustainable design. It was very inspiring to be part of a gathering that highlights the essential role designers play in shaping spaces that support health and well-being. The conference ended with a musical performance in the Barbican Conservatory. Thank you, organisers, supporters, and attendees, for making this event possible. #journalofbiophilicdesign #SustainableLiving #HealthySpaces #Barbicancentre #Palladian

Under two weeks to go now until the inaugural Biophilic Design Conference at the Barbican, in the City of London. Psychologist, Erich Fromm, first used the word biophilia in 1964, when he described it as “the passionate love of life and all that is alive”. Since then, biophilia has become increasingly recognised by the scientific community and also by designers and architects. Studies have shown evidence of positive benefits of human interaction with nature, such as improved productivity, lower levels of stress, enhanced learning and even improved recovery rates following illness. ‘Any occurrence of nature in the built environment cannot be called biophilic design if it has no bearing on our species’ inborn tendencies that have advanced our fitness and survival…The modern assumption that humans no longer need to affiliate with nature is revealed in the widespread practice of placing people in sensory deprived and artificial settings such as office buildings, hospitals, schools, shopping centers–with little if any contact with natural forces and stimuli. Much of today’s built environment is designed lacking adequate natural light, natural ventilation, natural materials, vegetation, views, environmental shapes and forms, and other evolved affinities for the natural world. The fundamental challenge of biophilic design is to address these deficiencies in the modern built environment by initiating a new framework for the beneficial occurrence of nature. ‘ Source: Kellert and Cabrese, ‘The Practice of Biophilic Design.’ If you are keen to learn more, or just hear about the latest innovations, you can attend the conference either in-person or online. https://lnkd.in/e6ATjq2J I look forward to sharing a taste of Forest Therapy within the stunning biome created in the Barbican Conservatory, a practice that initiates a new relationship with nature, and helps us remember that we thrive in a sensory world. #biophilia #biophilicdesign #entangledlife #naturenurtures #thrive

🌿 Why Biophilia Matters 🌿 Biophilia (from the Greek for “love of life”) reflects our innate connection to nature. This concept, when applied to design, has the power to elevate spaces in ways that go beyond aesthetics—impacting cognitive function, emotional well-being, and even physical health. Benefits of Connection with Nature: 🌿 Improves Cognitive Function & Happiness Integrating elements like plants, water, and natural light can uplift moods, boost creativity, and enhance overall happiness. 🌿 Enhances Recovery & Reduces Pain Nature-inspired designs can reduce recovery times by 8.5% and reliance on pain medication by 22%. 🌿 Boosts Workplace Well-being & Productivity Offices with biophilic designs see a 13% increase in well-being, 8% increase in productivity, and improved creativity with reduced absenteeism. 🌿 Improves Learning & Reduces ADHD Impacts Biophilic elements in learning environments can enhance concentration, improve test results, and increase attendance by up to 25%. 🌿 Increases Property Value & Reduces Crime Neighborhoods with access to nature report 7-8% less crime, while homes near green spaces increase in value by 4-5%. 🌿 Enhances Hospitality Experiences Hotel guests are willing to pay 23% more for rooms with natural views, highlighting nature’s intrinsic value. 🌿 Biophilia & Stress Reduction Simply having a view of nature helps reduce stress and enhances mood. 🌿 Natural Light & Calming Colours Incorporating sunlight and colors inspired by nature, such as green, can significantly lower stress. 🌿 Nature-Inspired Sensory Design Spaces designed with natural textures and shapes lead to better cognitive function and faster stress recovery—up to 70% faster in nature-inspired interiors. The science behind biophilia supports what we all intuitively feel: spaces that connect us to nature can dramatically improve our mental and physical well-being. At Xperiencemakers, we’re dedicated to designing environments that foster this essential connection. How can biophilic design benefit your space and enhance the experience for those within it? Let’s talk. #Biophilia #Neurodesign #NatureInDesign #WellbeingSpaces #Xperiencemakers #BiophilicDesign #MentalHealth #InteriorDesign Client Spotlight: Backs

Welcome to DAYHOUSE LIVING, a BIOPHILIC MAGAZINE, where DESIGN meets NATURE, HEALTH and SUSTAINABILITY. Since not many people know terms like biophilic design, regenerative design, nature-centric design, design for health, multisensory and restorative spaces, building biology and neuroaesthetics, the magazine aims to fill this knowledge gap within a general population. We launched the Dayhouse Living magazine to raise awareness about how science-informed design of the built environment can nurture well-being. We hope everyone can find something of interest. For example, how much do you know about the health benefits of urban trees? What do you know about limestone-based paints? Our feature article, “Healing by Design”, is a lay version of our peer-reviewed article “Healthy Dwelling”, we published in 2022 (LINK: https://lnkd.in/gUVruDRf). We look forward to receiving feedback and suggestions on the content, while we continuously improve the overall quality of the Dayhouse Living magazine. It’s always work-in-progress…. People are just plants with complex emotions 🌱🥰 And just like plants, we need the right environment to thrive! Did you know that we spend about 90% of our time indoors, cut off from our natural environment? Just as plants need sun and fresh air, humans need the connection to nature to feel healthy and happy. Biophilic design aims to bridge that gap: it incorporates organic elements into our offices to create a more nurturing atmosphere 🌿✨ It's not just about aesthetics – research shows that biophilic workspaces can: ✅ Boost productivity and creativity ✅ Improve mental health and reduce stress ✅ Foster a stronger connection to nature Swipe left to learn a bit more about the key principles of biophilia and see how we implement it in our projects ➡ ❓ What biophilic elements would you love to see in your workspace? Let me know your thoughts below! 💭
