For international women's day, I think we should focus on investing more on improving womens health! 😊 Women, on average, live longer than men, but spend 25% more of their lives in poor health on average. The McKinsey Health Institute's latest report in collaboration with the World Economic Forum finds that addressing the women's health gap can help the world’s 3.9 billion women live healthier lives – and boost the global economy by more than $1 trillion annually. 🚺 Findings from the landmark #EndGenderBias survey were launched at the National Women’s Health Summit earlier today, where our CEO, Mary Ann Baquero Geronimo had the opportunity to meet the Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, The Hon. Gerardine (Ged) Kearney MP. More than 2,800 responses were received to the Australian-first survey, which aimed to shed light on the experience and understanding of gender bias in the health system by women. 😮 A consistent theme in the survey's report was women feeling dismissed and disbelieved; being stereotyped as ‘hysterical’ and a ‘drama queen’, particularly when it comes to pain symptoms. 🌐 Calling for Action: Prioritizing Women's Health in Europe 🌐 In a world striving for equality, women's health remains a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of healthcare. Despite decades of progress, gender disparities persist, affecting everything from access to treatment to research funding. A recent " EU Manifesto for Women’s Health 2024" from the European Institute of Women’s Health " sheds light on these challenges and calls for a renewed focus on women's health across the European Union. From underrepresentation in clinical trials to higher rates of mental health disorders, the report highlights the multifaceted nature of the issue. But it's not just a matter of social justice – there are significant economic implications too. Closing the gender gap could lead to substantial GDP growth, while health inequalities result in economic losses. So, what can we do? It starts with acknowledging the problem and taking concrete steps to address it. From implementing gender-sensitive policies to investing in research on sex and gender differences, there are numerous ways we can make a difference. Collaboration is key! By working together – across sectors, borders, and disciplines – we can drive meaningful change and ensure that women's health is given the attention it deserves. Let's prioritize women's health, empower individuals, and create a future where everyone has access to quality healthcare, regardless of gender.
